 Abstract:  The Co-op of Cleveland was a consumer cooperative founded in 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes, correspondence, miscellaneous notes, bills of lading, freight bills, orders, invoices, advertisements, financial statements, tax and audit information, inventories, receipts, newsletters, press releases, pamphlets, announcements, and membership lists and cards.

1402Title:  Sigmund Braverman Papers

 Abstract:  Sigmund Braverman (1894-1960) was a Cleveland, Ohio, architect who designed many synagogues and other buildings throughout Cleveland, the United States, and Canada. Born in Austria-Hungary, he came to the United States at age 10 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1917. After service in World War I, he came to Cleveland in 1920 and opened an architectural practice. From 1932-1935, he served as assistant, and later acting, Cleveland city architect. In 1948, he formed a partnership with Moses P. Halperin, known as Braverman and Halperin, Architects. Synagogues in Cleveland designed by Braverman included the Young Israel Synagogue, Warrensville Center Synagogue, Temple Emanu El, Temple on the Heights, and Fairmount Temple. His work in Cleveland also included the Orthodox Home for the Aged, Cleveland Hebrew Schools, the Bureau of Jewish Education, and apartment buildings, theaters, shopping centers, schools, and restaurants. He was a member of many professional architectural organizations, and published articles on the subject of synagogue architecture. Braverman was also active in several Cleveland Jewish organizations, including the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Jewish Community Center, and the Zionist movement. He married Libbie L. Braverman in 1924. The collection consists of correspondence, drafts of speeches and articles, notes, newspaper clippings, programs, prints, drawings, blueprints, and renderings.

He was active in many social, educational and social welfare organizations including the Consumers' League of Ohio, The Cleveland Peace Committee, the Cleveland Emergency Peace Campaign, and the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York.  Abstract:  Carl Anton Walder (1881-1974) was a Swiss immigrant who settled in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1912. He was the founder of the Best Stove and Repair Company and a trustee and chairman of the board of the North American Swiss Alliance. He also served as the first Swiss Consular Agent for the Ohio District around Cleveland from 1936 to 1950. The collection consists of machine copied newspaper articles and miscellaneous items such as letters, Christmas cards, a Michigan Central Railroad Company engineers' examination book, a typescript of an article by William R. Murphy celebrating the twenty-first anniversary of the Best Stove and Repair Company, and a Department of State certificate naming Walder the Consular Agent of Switzerland.

 Abstract:  Asa Scott Brelsford was a soldier from Champaign County, Ohio, who saw action in Georgia while fighting with the Second Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers during the American Civil War. His younger brother, Harry, attended Wittenberg College after the war and later became a teacher. The collection consists of military papers, including orders to relieve the Second Regiment Ohio Volunteers, discharge papers, and a commission in the Grand Army of the Republic in Ohio. Also included are a diary and a debate program of Harry Brelsford.

 Abstract:  Willam Leet was the grandson of Samuel Leet of Guilford, Connecticut. William's father, Jared, moved to Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1792. William moved to Lorain County, Ohio, in 1839. His daughter, Mary Ann, married Joseph Moon and had a daughter named Catharine who married Philo Bennett in 1855. The collection consists of receipts, financial accounts, deeds, items relating to the settlement of William Leet's estate, Philo Bennett's Civil War discharge papers, his will, and his wife Catharine's Civil War Widow's Pension.

 Abstract:  Marcus Rosenwasser (1846-1910) was a Bohemian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, as a child and returned to establish his medical practice there in 1868, after studying abroad. His specialties were abdominal surgery and gynecology. His positions included president of the Cleveland Board of Health, vice-president of the American Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and fellow of the Association of Obstetrics. The collection consists of tributes to Dr. Rosenwasser upon his death, biographical materials about Rosenwasser and his family, correspondence, notes, and a notebook detailing many of his medical cases.

 Abstract:  The Junior League of Cleveland is a women's service organization founded in 1912, in Cleveland, Ohio. The organization's constitution states that the "object of the League shall be to foster interest among its members in the social, economic, and civic conditions of their community and to make efficient their volunteer service." The organization served the community through various activities such as musical and theatrical performances, volunteer drives, and philanthropy and among other activities to respond to the communities needs. New membership requirements are also explained. The collection consists of by-laws, constitutions, annual reports, committee reports, minutes, brochures, pamphlets, magazines, correspondence, scripts, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and blueprints.

1416Title:  L.N. Gross Company Records

 Abstract:  The L.N. Gross Company was a manufacturer and distributor of women's apparel founded in 1898 in Cleveland, Ohio, by a Russian immigrant, Louis N. Gross. Gross was president and manager until his death in 1941, when his sons, Nedward N., William V., and Julius S. Gross, and his son-in-law, Miltor E. Reed, became active in the management of the company. By the 1960s, the third generation of the Gross family managed the company. In 1919, the company built its headquarters at 1220 West Third Street in Cleveland. In 1929, additional production sites were acquired in Kent, Ohio, and in 1937 facilities opened in Fayetteville, Tennessee. During the Depression the company was troubled by strikes as well as the general business slump. The Welworth Realty Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the L.N. Gross Company, operated as title and leaseholder of the parent company's properties. An office was also maintained in the New York City garment district. Beginning in 1950, product manufacturing was performed by subcontractors in their own facilities. A wholly owned subsidiary, Bradley Knitwear Company, acted as sales outlet for the parent company. In 1974, company headquarters moved to Mayfield Village, Ohio. In 1984, after several years of financial difficulties, control of the company was turned over to an outside investment group, and the name was changed to Bradley Sportswear, Inc. The collection consists of a history of the company, an autobiography, passport and visa of Louis Gross, correspondence, reports, applications for patents, contracts, account books, and miscellaneous materials, including scrapbooks containing advertisements for garments made by the company.

Its 1974 population was 1,402. The collection consists of the journal of the Board of Education, the Mayor's Criminal Dockets, the City Council records, an unidentified daybook of dry goods and grocery accounts, and miscellaneous notes which include affidavits for cases from the Mayor's Criminal Dockets, and memos about legislation and other matters from the City Council records.

He was also active in Jewish and Zionist organizations, and was secretary and president of the Jewish National Fund Council of Cleveland and honorary national chairman of the Jewish National Fund of the United States. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, reports, brief biographical sketches of prominent Jewish and non-Jewish individuals, invitations, programs, certificates, newspaper clippings and articles, the constitution of the Jewish National Fund, and background information on the Jewish National Fund. Most of the materials pertain more to the Jewish National Fund than to Julius Amber.
