1301Title:  Vaclav Snajdr Papers     
 Creator:  Snajdr, Vaclav 
 Dates:  1867-1954 
 Abstract:  Vaclav Snajdr (1847-1920) was a Czech writer and journalist who moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1869 to edit the newspaper Slavie. He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he began his own paper, Pokrok, in 1873. When it failed in 1876 Snajdr remained in Cleveland and started a weekly, rationalist newspaper, Dennice Novoveku, in 1877. Later he also published a Sunday paper, Jednota. From 1883 to 1886 Snajdr published Osvobozenych, and from 1891 to 1896 he published Organ Bratsoi of the Cesko-Slovanska Podporyici Spolecnost. Snajdr sold his newspaper and publishing business to Svet Publishing Company in 1910 but remained active in local politics and business. He retired in 1919 and moved to California. The collection consists of correspondence, notes taken for Snajdr's newspaper Dennice Novoveku, legal papers, checks, receipts, tax forms, biographical material on the Snajdr family, a memorial booklet, notes on the Snajdr estate, and miscellaneous materials, including obituaries, a xeroxed copy of Pokrok, articles, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings.

 Abstract:  Samuel Rickman (1850-1914) was a Hungarian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1872. He and his wife, Hannah (1844-1911), were active in local Jewish and Hungarian organizations. The collection consists of account books, receipts from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Sons of Isaac Association, and obituaries of Mr. and Mrs. Rickman.

Klein, correspondence and postcards of his relative Cecile Schaffner, and a friendship book containing signatures and writings from many early Cleveland Jewish settlers (1851-1875).

 Abstract:  George H. Hopper was a Cleveland, Ohio, paint mill operator for Standard Oil of Ohio who also owned barrel plants near Standard Oil's refineries. He sold the plants to New York Standard Oil in 1882 and became head of its barrel preparing department. He and Mark L. Deering invented hoop-driving and barrel-trussing machines and the apparatus for gluing barrels. The collection consists of income and expense book for Hopper's plants, a letter to John D. Rockefeller, a farm sale contract between Hopper and Silas Bigelow, miscellaneous receipts, and a recipe.

Nemanich (1908-1975) was the president of the American Slovenian Catholic Union (K.S.K.J.) and of the committee for the construction of the Slovenian Chapel in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The collection consists of American Slovenian Catholic Union (K.S.K.J.) correspondence, loan applications, published histories of the K.S.K.J, press releases, financial statements and minutes of the Slovenian Chapel Dedication Committee, and lists of delegates, committee assignments and executive staff recommendations for the K.S.K.J.'s 28th General Convention.

 Abstract:  The Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland was established in 1875 as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in Cleveland, Ohio. It merged with the Hebrew Relief Organization in 1883 to form the Hebrew Relief Association. It was renamed the Jewish Social Service Bureau in 1922. The Bureau affiliated with the Western Reserve University School of Applied Social Sciences and helped train students for field placement. In 1943, the Bureau changed its name to the Jewish Family Service Association. The collection consists of minutes, reports, correspondence, financial records, case files, speeches, research papers, and statistics of the Association; minutes, reports, and correspondence of agencies working with the Association; and thirty-eight theses submitted to the Western Reserve University School of Applied Social Sciences.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Federation of Musicians was established in 1877 as the Musicians Mutual Protective Association. In 1895 the Association joined the American Federation of Musicians and became A.F.M. Local 4. African American members left to form their own local, No. 550, in 1910, but reunited with Local 4, also known as the Cleveland Federation of Musicians, in 1962. Establishment of minimum wages and protection of its members were the union's main goals. Women musicians were given equal protection after being admitted to the union in 1901. Other union activities included support of other unions, publication of the Cleveland Musician, and sponsorship of the Druid Club. The collection consists of constitutions, minutes, correspondence, financial records, wage scale directories, membership lists, material on the 1935 trial of a union member, beneficiary notices, contracts, issues of the Cleveland Musician, scrapbooks, miscellaneous material, and records of the Druid Club.

The collection consists of correspondence (primarily in German script), passports, a certificate of thanks for army service (with printed signatures of Abraham Lincoln and Edwin Stanton), and miscellaneous papers.

The collection consists of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, letters, printed material on the medical careers of H.J. and Wilfrid Sharp, and photocopies of letters and newspaper clippings on Mrs. Sharp's suffrage activities.

The collection consists of letters to Stanley-Brown, "Reminiscences" by him, letters to the James A. Garfield family, and a Christmas card from Ida Tarbell.

 Abstract:  Gala dinner in honor of the 175th anniversary of the settling of Cleveland, Ohio. Its toastmaster and hostess was radio commentator Katherine Murphy Halle, daughter of the department store founder, Samuel Halle. The collection consists of copies of newspaper clippings, resumes, and entries in Who's Who in America about 300 distinguished Clevelanders who attended the dinner. Also included are R.S.V.P. cards with handwritten regrets.

 Abstract:  Anna Katherine Wasserman (1828-1904) emigrated from Germany to Bluestone (South Euclid), Ohio, in 1845 and married a German farmer named Schroeder. Her son, Edward Theodore, helped her work the family farm and served as grocer and postmaster of Bluestone. Another son, Christian, traveled to Montana in 1879. Her sister, Hattie Wasserman, married Cleveland hardware dealer George Klooz. The collection consists primarily of letters (in German script) to Anna Schroeder's son, Christian. Also included are letters from other Schroeder family members and from Anna's sister and brother-in-law, Hattie and George Klooz.

 Abstract:  Joseph Musser (1767-1846) was a doctor who helped plan the village of Smithville, Green Township, Wayne County, Ohio in 1836. His son Benjamin Musser (1815-1885) was an officer of the Smithville High School and Principal of its Mercantile Department in 1878. The collection consists of a ledger book containing the accounts of Dr. Musser's patients and the penmanship exercises of his son, Benjamin. Also included are newspaper clippings and an invoice.
