It was established in 1854 and quickly expanded to include numerous branches throughout the Cleveland area which offer a full range of community, recreational and educational activities. The collection consists of photographs of YMCA functions, facilities, and past presidents and other officials. Includes loose photographs and 2 unbound scrapbooks. Photographs include the Fenn Hall and Central YMCA buildings, the Lakewood West Side and the Collinwood branches; East End photographs, photographs of a YMCA building being built, various unidentified group portraits, and one photo of Billy Sunday and Douglas Fairbanks playing baseball for the YMCA. Activities pictured include swimming, athletics, camping, and classes. | | | Creator: | Lockwood, George D. Family | | | Dates: | 1855-1950 | | | Abstract: | Stanley G. Lockwood moved from Connecticut to Painesville, Ohio, where he opened a general store, in 1835. His sons, George D. and John S., continued the firm. In 1856 George moved to Davenport, Iowa and opened another store, Livingston and Lockwood. During the American Civil War he was an officer in Companies D and I of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother, Stanley B., served in Company G. of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment and in Company K of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of various members of the Lockwood and related families. Organized in 1892, the club chose to identify itself with Frederick Locker-Lampson by adopting the name of his Sussex County, England, estate, "Rowfant." The club insignia, groundhog and candles, are used in initiation and election procedures. The collection consists of photographs, postcards, negatives, and sketches relating to the Cleveland Rowfant Club, its members, activities, facilities, and other related subjects. Mary D. Paine Kewish was a descendant of Hendrick E. Paine, an early settler of Painesville and LeRoy Township, Ohio. She was married to Lucius L. Kewish, of LeRoy. She and her daughter-in-law, Laetitia Clague Kewish, collected the family papers. The collection consists of tintypes, carte de visites, cabinet cards, and other photographs of various members and occasions of the Clague, Kewish, Paine, and related families. It was nicknamed the Nickel Plate Road. After it failed it was taken over by the newly organized New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad in 1887. It merged into the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1964. The collection consists of two photograph albums and loose photographs pertaining to the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, including pictures of railroad bridges, locomotives, trains, track, depots, towns, wrecks, railroad officials, and work scenes. In addition to designing several asylums for the insane in Ohio, the North Carolina State Penitentiary, the reformatory at Mansfield, Ohio, the Schofield Building in downtown Cleveland, private residences, and public schools; he was the architect and chief proponent of the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, located on Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of of photographs, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, stereoviews, sketches, cabinet card photographs, glass mound prints, and albums, of members of the Scofield family of Cleveland, Ohio. Hope United was formed in 1967 by the merger of Emanuel Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1865) and First Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1854), two early German churches. Wesley Methodist was formed in 1947 by the merger of St. Paul's (est. 1853) and Franklin Ave. (est. 1833) Methodist Episcopal churches. | | | Creator: | Buell, Joseph Family | | | Dates: | 1800-1915 | | | Abstract: | The Buell family was a pioneer family from Connecticut who helped settle Marietta, Ohio. Joseph Buell was a sergeant at Fort Harmar, across the Muskingum River from Marietta, when the first settling party from the Ohio Company arrived in April 1788. He later settled in Marietta with his family. Joseph Buell ran a successful tavern. In addition, he was appointed an associate justice of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas and a major general in the Ohio Militia in 1803, and served an an elected state senator from 1803-1805. Joseph's brother Timothy Buell was a captain in the militia and also served as a county magistrate, a state representative from 1820-1822, and sheriff of Washington County. Many of their descendants were also prominent in the affairs of Marietta and Washington County. The collection consists of portraits of members of the Buell, Curtis, and Nye families.
