He was the son of Herman Black Joseph, a member of the prominent Joseph family in Cleveland and a successful broker, and Anne Wendell Costello (Bunny Wendell), a New York actress in the early twentieth century. He worked in public relations and as a writer, producer, and disc jockey for local radio.
