He was an abolitionist and a member of the Republican Party. While in Harpersfield, he served two terms as sheriff of Ashtabula County. Hendry also took pains to record the history of his family for his children. His father, David Hendry, had settled in Ashtabula County in 1806. His son, Francis, was a Civil War soldier.
