 Abstract:  David M. Miller (1908-1977) was Soldier in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War and in the United States Army during World War II. He later worked for the Veterans Administration in Cleveland, Ohio and taught at Kent State University. Miller was a novelist and an author of autobiographical reminiscences, and wrote articles published in the Cleveland Jewish News. The collection consists of letters from Spain, drafts af articles relating his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings and essays on the Miller family and on issues of Jewish concern. Also included are photocopies of the records of the Independent Mendelsohn Lodge of Elyria, Ohio, with a translation from the Yiddish by David Miller (1918-1919), including bylaws, lists, and minutes.

 Abstract:  Wilbur F. Hinman was a soldier in Company E of the 65th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga in 1863 yet remained in the service until his company mustered out in November 1865. The collection consists of letters from Hinman to his family in Berea, Ohio, while he was in the service. Topics include the battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro in 1863 and the Atlanta campaign of 1864. Also included are a letter from David Hinman to his wife, and a letter to Wilbur Hinman from Carrie Starr.

 Abstract:  Asa Scott Brelsford was a soldier from Champaign County, Ohio, who saw action in Georgia while fighting with the Second Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers during the American Civil War. His younger brother, Harry, attended Wittenberg College after the war and later became a teacher. The collection consists of military papers, including orders to relieve the Second Regiment Ohio Volunteers, discharge papers, and a commission in the Grand Army of the Republic in Ohio. Also included are a diary and a debate program of Harry Brelsford.

 Abstract:  William Foster (1840-1907) was a medical student from Scio (New Market), in Harrison County, Ohio who became a sergeant and hospital steward in the 126th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was involved in numerous battles before he mustered out in July, 1865. He married Katherine Humphrey that September. The collection consists of photocopies of Civil War correspondence, mainly to Katherine Humphrey.

 Abstract:  William Tully Bascom was an Ohio journalist and editor. His daughter Laura L., a music teacher and soloist, married Dr. Hiram H. Little. Their son, Tully Bascom Little, was a Cleveland businessman who became chairman of the National Defense Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. W.T. Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and genealogical and autobiographical material.

 Abstract:  Albert G. Jones was an American Civil War veteran born in Lake County, Ohio. Jones served as a 2nd Lieutenant, 27th United States Colored Troops, a unit primarily composed of Ohio soldiers, from January 1864-September 1865. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant in September 1864, and in 1865 was appointed Assistant Adjutant General. The 27th USCT participated in the campaign that captured Fort Fisher and Wilmington, North Carolina. After the war, Jones returned to Cleveland, where he worked as a laborer, clerk, and sewer inspector. In 1870, he was appointed Assistant Marshal, Northern District of Ohio, 9th United States Census. He was a charter member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Forest City Post Number 556. The collection consists of correspondence, deeds, and memorabilia.

 Abstract:  Morris Ullman (1835-1908) was a German Jew who emigrated to the United States in 1849. With his brother Emanuel and his cousin Leopold Einstein, he founded the Ullman, Einstein Company, a liquor business in Cleveland, Ohio. When it was dissolved in 1919, his son Monroe and grandson Rufus founded the Ullman and Einstein Realty Company. Rufus had previously served with the United States Army in World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial papers, distillery formula books, receipts, certificates, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.
