 Abstract:  The Midwest Railroad Historical Foundation was a Northeast Ohio railroad enthusiasts club which was formed in 1945 as the Midwest Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. In 1955 it incorporated as the Midwest Railroad Historical Foundation. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, financial statements, ledgers, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, employee and public timetables, newsletters, annual reports, dispatcher books, employee time books, and architectural drawings.

2Title:  New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad Co. Records

 Abstract:  The New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad Company was founded in 1881 to connect Buffalo and Chicago via Cleveland, Ohio. It was nicknamed the Nickel Plate Road. After it failed, it was taken over by the newly organized New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad in 1887. It merged into the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1964. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, reminiscences, financial records, memoranda, notebooks, ticket stubs, newspaper and magazine clippings, and oversize volumes containing documents and clippings.

 Abstract:  Joseph Doherty (1889-1965) was a public relations officer for Oris P. and Mantis J. Van Sweringen, developers of the Cleveland, Ohio, suburb of Shaker Heights, and Cleveland's Terminal Tower and Union Terminal complex. The Van Sweringen brothers established a railroad empire in the 1920s which collapsed during the Depression. Doherty wrote a history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad entitled, Smooth is the road. The collection consists of correspondence, press releases, official statements of the Van Sweringens, promotional materials for the Van Sweringen projects, including Shaker Village, Ohio, magazine articles about the Van Sweringens, newspaper clippings, and a manuscript by Doherty concerning the Van Sweringen brothers. The collection contains information relative to the Chesapeake and Ohio, Nickel Plate and Pere Marquette railroads.

 Abstract:  Taylor Hampton (Virginia Taylor) was a personal friend of the Van Sweringen brothers who shared their interest in railroads. The collection consists of manuscript notes and copies or originals of magazine and newspaper articles, pamphlets, blueprints, maps, annual reports, financial statements, stock certificates, time tables, charts, and letters used by Hampton to research her book, The Nickel Plate Road, the history of a great railroad. The book was published in 1947.

 Abstract:  Peter Hitchcock, Sr. (1781-1853) was an early settler of Burton, Ohio, who became an Ohio and United States legislator and Chief Justice of Ohio. His sons, Reuben, Henry, and Peter Jr., entered the judiciary, ministry and politics respectively and were affiliated with Burton Academy, Western Reserve College and the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company. the collection consists of correspondence of family members and miscellaneous papers relating to Western Reserve College, Burton Academy, the Atlantic and Great Western Railway and the early history of Burton, Ohio.

He was an outspoken critic of other businessmen, supporter of labor, promoter of better U.S.-Soviet relations, and organizer of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. The collection consists of correspondence, pamphlets, annual reports, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, notes, office memoranda, speeches, writings, appointment diaries and calendars, scrapbooks, documents, publications, cartoons, honorary degrees, certificates, maps, and surveys, relating to Eaton's business, political, and personal affairs.

 Abstract:  Elisha Whittlesey (1783-1863) was a lawyer, United States Representative from Ohio (1822-1838), and public official. The collection consists of correspondence, legal papers, receipts, account ledgers, memoranda, drafts of legislation, and land deeds. The Elisha Whittlesey Papers deal with his career as a member of the United States Congress for sixteen years, comptroller of the United States Treasury for eight years, and Auditor of the Post Office Department for two years. His voluminous correspondence involves a large number of men prominent in national, late, and local affairs, particularly the Whig Party, American Colonization Society, the American Bible Society, and the development of the canals, rivers, harbors, railroads, and banks of northern Ohio and the Western Reserve. His mass of legal papers deals with the practice of his law office in Canfield, Ohio, his large holdings of land in the Western Reserve, Firelands, and the Maumee Valley. His wife and family occupy another prominent place in his correspondence, and he also had an interest in agricultural problems and served in the War of 1812.
