It became the Cleveland Printing Pressmen's and Assistants Union, Local No. 56 in 1929, after merging with the Cleveland Pressmen's Assistants Union, Local No. 45. The present name was adopted after a 1973 merger with the Stereotypers and Electrotypers International. Activities of the union have included support of other unions, establishment of a technical school and a tuberculosis sanitarium in Tennessee, and support of the Cleveland Citizen, one of America's oldest labor newspapers.
