Her major interests included women's rights and world peace. She served as a city councilman in Fairview Park, Ohio, from 1958-1962. She was a founding member of Womenspace. Each year, the National Organization for Women and Womenspace confers the Josephine Irwin Award to women contributing to women's rights. The collection consists of photographs depicting Irwin and others at various events, including the Fairview Park Senior Citizens Club Christmas party (1964), the Rocky River Research Club Colonial party (1932), and the Tokyo Women's Club Tea (1966).
