The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Albina Cermak in her various posts, including United States Collector of Customs, with officials and employees. There are also Cermak family portraits, and individual portraits of noted politicians, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. | | | Creator: | Agudath B'nai Israel Congregation | | | Dates: | 1923-1969 | | | Abstract: | Agudath B'nai Israel Congregation is a Conservative congregation founded in 1925 by the merger of Agudath Achim and Beth Israel, two existing Jewish congregations in Lorain, Ohio, and a B'nai B'rith group about to establish a third congregation. A new temple was built to house the congregation and also to serve as a center for the Lorain Jewish community. In 1983 membership accounted for over ninety percent of Lorain's Jewish population. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of staff, organizations within the congregation, and members; and views of the various synagogues and activities of Agudath B'nai Israel Congregation, Lorain, Ohio. | | | Creator: | Florence S. Shapero Dancing School | | | Dates: | 1920-1960 | | | Abstract: | Florence S. Shapero (1897-1970) was the premier children's dance and social graces instructor in the Jewish community of Cleveland, Ohio, for forty years. A daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants who arrived in the United States in 1891, she received her schooling in Cleveland, graduting from Central High School ca. 1915. Following her graduation, Shapero pursued ballet training in New York City. She returned to Cleveland in the 1920s, opening her first studio in 1929 in rented space in the Masonic Hall at 1949 East 105th Street. She remained in this studio which was close to the heavily Jewish population area of Glenville until the population shifts to the suburbs in the late 1940s and early 1950s. By 1952, Shapero had relocated to Cleveland Heights, where much of Cleveland's Jewish population had resettled. She maintained a studio in the Masonic Temple at 1633 Lee Road and continued teaching dance and the social graces which accompany it until her death almost twenty years later in 1970. The collection consists of sixty-three black-and-white prints, one of which is a hand-tinted portrait. Twenty-five of the prints are oversize. Participants from civilian aviation, such as aerobatic teams, high-powered biplanes, stunt pilots, and formula race heats, are also included. The collection consists of aerial views of of Cleveland, Ohio, including Burke Lakefront Airport; action photographs of the Concorde SST flyby; and portraits of various participants, including the United States Army Golden Knights parachute team, stuntman Johnny Kazian, stunt pilot Jimmy Franklin, and 1985 Grand marshal Frederick C. Crawford. The photographs were taken by Paul V. | | | Creator: | Walton-Jennings Family | | | Dates: | 1860-1964 | | | Abstract: | John Whittlesey Walton was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist. The nephew of Charles Whittlesey, Walton started a ship chandlery business and co-founded the Upson-Walton Company in 1893. In 1867, Walton was one of the men responsible for the revival of the YMCA in Cleveland. From 1874-1926, Walton was actively involved in charity, serving during this period as treasurer of the Bethel Associated Charities. Throughout his life, Walton was keenly interested in the field of sociology and in the emerging scientific approach to social work. His daughter, Gladys Walton, was involved in numerous dramatic and musical events. She married Lamson Jennings in 1919. The collection consists of 5 photograph albums and 9 color stereo transparencies. Four albums contain portraits of family members and friends of the Walton-Jennings families. Those pictured include members of the Lamson, Calhoun, Clark, Sturdevant, Curtis, Judd, Kinney, North, and Hart families. Some identified photographs are missing from the albums. The fifth album contains prints and photographs of the travels of John Whittlesey Walton to England, Florida, Toronto, New England, and Europe. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of photographs that relate primarily to TRW's predecessor company, Thompson Products, but views from Ramo Wooldridge and TRW are also included. Consists of individual and group portraits of company personnel and management, and views of interior and exterior plant buildings in Cleveland and Euclid, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Bell, California; St. Louis, Missouri; and St. Catharines, Ontario. Product photographs include automotive valves, pistons, generators, fuel pumps, jet engine parts, and electronic and industrial equipment. Product ads include company logos, advertisements for trade shows, parts stores and machine shops; as well as individual products and displays of manuals and catalogs. It merged with the Welfare Council of Cleveland in 1917 to form the Cleveland Welfare Federation. In 1972 it became the Federation for Community Planning. By 1919 it had given up solicitation of funds and by 1966 their allocation also, evolving into a specialized community planning agency. The collection consists of views of various activities sponsored by the Federation for Community Planning. Some of the activities pictured include the Foster Home Recruiting Center, Mass Blood Testing Program, TB Clinic van, and Golden Age Hobby shows. Also included are individual and group portraits of those associated with the Federation, including Edward D. | | | Creator: | Cleveland Military Units | | | Dates: | 1900-1962 | | | Abstract: | Troop A was founded in 1877 in Cleveland, Ohio, as an independent military unit to defend against strikers and unruly mobs. It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. The collection consists of photographs of Troop A, of Cleveland, Ohio, and the 135th Field Artillery. One album contains photographs of Troop A training in August 1912 at Novelty, Ohio. Another album depicts members of Troop A patrolling the Mexican border during 1916 and of the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. Loose photographs contain group portraits and other images which chronicle the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. The first Cleveland, Ohio, branch, No. 79, was organized in 1904. The organization provides insurance, operates a cemetery, teaches Yiddish classes, and has supported such issues as unionizing the Cleveland garment industry, child labor laws, social security, civil rights, and fighting Soviet anti-semitism. In 1975, there were six branches in Cleveland, with a school, the Workmen's Circle Educational Center, located on South Green Road.
