222Title:  Saint Luke's Hospital Construction Photographs

 Abstract:  Saint Luke's Hospital began operations as Cleveland General Hospital in 1894 on Woodland Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Its facilities were moved to Carnegie Avenue in 1908, and to its present site on Shaker Boulevard in 1927. After a brief merger with MetroHealth Medical Center in the early 1990s, it was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and its Ohio partner, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine in 1997. The non-profit proceeds of the sale were used to create the Saint Luke's Foundation. The hospital is currently owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine Health System and the University Hospitals Health System. The collection consists of views of the construction of the addition to Saint Luke's Hospital at Shaker Boulevard. and East 116th Street, Cleveland, Ohio. The photographs were taken by R. E. Hawkins of Lakewood, Ohio, for the Hubbell and Benes Company, architects. Included are some panoramic views of the hospital addition construction.

 Abstract:  William J. Gordon donated his estate at his death in 1892 to the city of Cleveland, Ohio. It became a public park with recreational facilities. In 1978, its lakefront section became a part of Lakefront State Park, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Inland portions remained under the jurisdiction of the city of Cleveland. The collection consists of views of Gordon Park, Cleveland, Ohio. It includes views of the estate of William J. Gordon and the development of the estate as a Cleveland city park. The views include Doan brook, the harbor, beach, pier, lighthouse, and bathhouse.

 Abstract:  The Benjamin Rose Institute is a Cleveland, Ohio, foundation for the care and assistance of the elderly formed in 1908 via the estate of Benjamin Rose. The first foundation in the United States to address primarily the needs of the elderly, the Benjamin Rose Institute worked initially to keep the aged in their communities and avert their institutionalization. The Institute developed a national reputation for geriatric standards, care and research under Margaret Wagner, director from 1930-59. The Benjamin Rose Hospital was opened in 1953 and operated jointly with University Hospitals of Cleveland (Ohio) specializing in old age rehabilitation and health care. The Institute presently runs the Margaret Wagner House, a nursing home. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Benjamin Rose, his family, friends, residences, businesses and properties. Also included are views of the Cleveland Provision Company, the Rose building on East 9th Street, and portraits of people connected with the Benjamin Rose Institute and its facilities.

 Abstract:  William Anderson Haven (1888-1973) was a chemical engineer who worked at U.S. Steel, New York Steel, Carnegie Steel, Marting Iron Company and Republic Steel. After management differences with Cyrus Eaton at Republic in 1929 he left to become vice-president of Arthur G. McKee and Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Before his retirement in 1953 he had planned or supervised the construction of numerous steel plants and oil refineries in the United States and throughout the world. The collection consists of consist of views of steel plants in the United States, France, Germany, and India. Included are views of the Republic Steel Corporation plant in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Great Lakes Steel Corporation plant in Detroit, Michigan. Also included are family photographs and views from trips to the Soviet Union, China, and Japan.

 Abstract:  Dudley J. Hard (1872-1950) was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and soldier. He was a member of Cleveland's Troop A, serving with the First Squadron Ohio Cavalry during the Mexican border dispute of 1916-17, and with the 135th Field Artillery in France during World War I, commanding the unit from Aug. 1917 to Apr. 1919. He retired a brigadier general in 1936. His father, Curtis V. Hard, of Wooster, Ohio, served as a colonel in the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Cuban campaign of 1898. The collection consists of portraits of Colonel Dudley J. Hard and views of Troop A, the 8th Ohio Cavalry, the 107th Cavalry, and the 135th Field Artillery Regiment at various camps and during the Spanish American War, World War I, Mexican border duty, and in the 1920s and 1930s. Also included are views of President William McKinley's funeral in Canton, Ohio, 1901, and unidentified strikers, ca. 1920.

 Abstract:  Garrett A. Morgan (1877-1963) was an entrepreneur and inventor whose inventions included the electric traffic signal and the gas mask. Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895 and opened his own sewing machine sales and repair shop in 1907. He received a patent on his gas mask in 1912 and formed the National Safety Device Co. to manufacture and market it. He also established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Co., The Cleveland Call and Post, and the Wakeman Country Club for African Americans. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Garrett A. Morgan, his family, and friends. Also included are views of his residence, and of his inventions, including the gas mask, traffic signal, and a hair treatment system. The collection also includes views relating to the water intake crib disaster in Cleveland, Ohio in 1917.
