 Abstract:  Harvey Rice (1800-1891) was a lawyer, legislator, businessman, and author, of Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, business papers, land deeds and titles, certificates, and speeches. Primarily letters relating to the Oliver H. Perry Monument, 1860-1883. Also includes letters, financial records, and newspaper clippings relating to the construction of the Moses Cleaveland Monument on Cleveland's Public Square, 1886-1888.

3Title:  M. A. Hanna Monument Association Records

 Abstract:  The M. A. Hanna Monument Association formed shortly after the death of Marcus Alonzo Hanna with the intention of erecting a monument to him in Cleveland, Ohio. A subscription fund was established to pay for a statue created by American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. New York architect Henry Bacon aided in the design of the pedestal and base and superintended the final erection. Hanna was a leading businessman in Cleveland and a national leader of the Republican party who managed Wm. McKinley's successful presidential campaigns in 1896 and 1900. In 1897, Hanna replaced U.S. Senator John Sherman when he became secretary of state, and Hanna served as Senator from Ohio until his death in 1904. The collection consists of correspondence between sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, architect Henry Bacon, Mrs. M.A. Hanna, and various members of the association, particularly chairman Samuel Mather. This collection pertains primarily to the efforts of the Hanna Monument Association to plan, select a site, and erect a memorial to Marcus Alonzo Hanna in Cleveland. A memorial to Senator Hanna was unveiled at University Circle in 1908.

 Abstract:  Edmund H. Chapman (1906-1975) was a professor at Western Reserve University and chairman of its Department of Art and Architecture. He authored the book, "Cleveland, Village to Metropolis," based on his dissertation, "Early Cleveland--the evolution of a city," and wrote numerous articles on local architecture. The collection consists of Chapman's dissertation, the manuscript to his book, journal articles, lecture notes, and student papers.

 Abstract:  Saint John's Episcopal Church is a congregation which maintains the oldest church edifice in Cleveland, Ohio, the group splitting off from Trinity Parish when it moved from Ohio City to Cleveland's east side in 1826. In the late 1960s, the congregation merged with the Inner City Protestant Parish, an interdenominational group of congregations which met at St. John's and other churches during the 1950s and 1960s. The church is also known as St. John's Historic Episcopal Church. The collection consists of minutes of the trustees and parish council, financial information, administrative records, documents pertaining to the restoration of the church building, and files relating to the parish history. The collection pertains to the administrative functions of a prominent Cleveland parish, its efforts to restore the church edifice, and its involvement in ecumenical and reform movements, from the 1920s to the 1980s.

 Abstract:  The Union Commerce Building, subsequently known as the Huntington Building, is located at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East Ninth Street in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It has housed a series of banks, retail stores, and offices since it was built in the 1920s. The collection consists of a building appraisal completed by Ostendorf-Morris Company at the request of the noteholders committee of Union Properties, Inc.

 Abstract:  Joseph and Jacob Perkins were sons of Simon Perkins, general land agent in the Western Reserve. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. Also included are photographs, diaries, trip journals, correspondence from Simon and Nancy Perkins, financial journals, ledgers and account books of Stephen E. Brooks, as well as material relating to the Cleveland, Warren & Pittsburgh Railroad, the Chicago, Danville & Vincennes Railroad, the Cleveland Female Seminary, the Cleveland Board of Park Commissioners, the Hill Clutch Company and the Walker Manufacturing Company.
