1641Title:  James Newton Papers

 Abstract:  James Newton was a Connecticut native who moved to Hudson, Ohio, to join the mercantile business of his sister (Eunice Newton Oviatt) and brother-in-law (Heman Oviatt). He later prospered as a farmer in Charlestown, Portage County. His brothers John and Eben moved to Ohio and entered politics. John was an Ohio state legislator and associate judge of the Ohio Supreme Court. Eben was a state senator, a judge of the common pleas court, and a U.S. congressman. A relative, Sophia Newton, was president of the Female Missionary Sewing Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Charlestown (est. 1844). Another relative, Emma Newton, left behind three composition books (1837-1838). The collection consists of family correspondence, land documents, receipts, Emma Newton's composition books and the by-laws and minutes of the Female Missionary Sewing Society.

The collection consists of a bound volume listing transactions, customer's names, description of goods purchased, and their cost.  Abstract:  Local 80 was chartered in 1890 as a Cleveland, Ohio, Local of the Operative Plasterers (est. 1864). Local 80 was dropped in 1898 but rechartered in 1899. The cement masons were admitted to the union in 1914. Membership in the Local was and is predominantly Italian. The collection consists of constitutions, minutes of regular and executive meetings, agreements with contractors' associations, correspondence, financial reports and records, arbitration and court cases, and membership records.

 Abstract:  Abraham Stern was a Cleveland, Ohio, born philanthropist and financier. He joined Moses, Levy and Co., a fancy goods and toy store, in 1868. It became Levy and Stearn in 1872 and Stearn and Co., ca. 1905. Stearn was a director of the Society for Savings, the American Savings Bank and other institutions. He was a trustee of the Foundation of Jewish Charities and of the Jewish Orphan Asylum. He married Bertha Rohrheimer in 1876. The collection consists of a financial journal, lists of expenses, an advertisement, the marriage contract of Abraham Stearn and Betha Rohrheimer (1876) and a letter book detailing Stearn's stocks, investments, and his interest in the National Acme Manufacturing Co. Other topics include Levy and Stearn, charitable organizations and family affairs.

 Abstract:  Andreas Castro was a community relations representative with the Civil Service Commission, and leader in Cleveland, Ohio's Hispanic community. He helped form several committees and organizations to unify and advance Cleveland's Hispanic community, including La Raza Unida, the Spanish Center, the Spanish Democratic Committee, Spanish American Committee, Commission on Catholic Community Action, and the Spanish Speaking Task Force. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, awards, constitutions, membership rolls, and budget reports of several Hispanic committees in which Castro was active.

 Abstract:  St. Mary of the Assumption is a Roman Catholic church founded in 1860, in Cleveland, Ohio, as St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church. In 1951 it changed its name to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church. It later became known as Our Lady of the Highway Shrine.  Abstract:  The Lumir Hlahol Tyle Singing and Dramatic Society Czech-American cultural club formed in 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, by the merger of three separate Czech groups. Lumir (est. 1867) and Hlahol (est. 1896) were choral societies which merged in 1918 as Lumir-Hlahol. They were joined by the Tyl dramatic society, which was founded in 1881 and called Budivoj until 1903. The collection consists of a constitution, minutes, correspondence, membership lists, a dues book, and sheet music.
