1Title:  Erastus Fitch Merwin Journal
 Creator:  Merwin, Erastus Fitch
 Dates:  1854-1862
Abstract:  Erastus Fitch Merwin was a resident of Braceville, Trumbull County, Ohio, who sailed to Panama in 1854, traveled across Panama on a mule train, then sailed on to San Francisco, with a brief stop in Acapulco. He eventually settled in Nevada, but returned to Ohio after eight years. In 1863 he joined the 2nd Ohio Cavalry and was captured and died in a Confederate prison at Salisbury, N.C. in 1864. Merwin's journal details his trip westward and back east, describing the places he visited, his accommodations, fellow passengers, the natives of Mexico, and such events as a military altercation between Santa Ana and Republican forces in Acapulco, a shipboard murder-suicide, and other occurrences.
