His family resided in Mesopotamia, Ohio. The letters and diaries provide a detailed record of his activities while at Camp Dennison and Camp Chase in Ohio (1861-1862), in Virginia and Washington, D. C. (1862-1864), and in Tennessee and Missouri (1864-1865).
