 Abstract:  The First New Jerusalem Society was a church founded in 1838, in Chillicothe (Ross County), Ohio, whose members were followers of the doctrines of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), Swedish scientist, mystic and religious philosopher. The collection consists of minutes, lists of members, copies of agreements, and correspondence. Pre-1857 records recorded from memory by Amasa D.  Abstract:  Manasseh Cutler (1742-1823) was a land agent for the Ohio Company of Associates. The collection consists of handwritten copies of journals describing Cutler's trips to New York and Philadelphia (1787) to negotiate a contract with Congress for the purchase of lands for the Ohio Company, and to the future site of Marietta, Ohio (1788) to visit the Ohio Company purchase there. Included in the second volume is a journal of Reverend Joseph Badger (1803-1807).

 Abstract:  John May (1748-1812) and his son, Henry Knox May, (1780-1865) were merchants and shippers in Boston, Massachusetts, and proprietors of the Union Wharf (May's Wharf). John May was also a member and agent of the Ohio Company of Associates. His grandson, Edward Tuckerman May was an agent at the Boston Customs House. The collection consists of correspondence, financial accounts, receipts, speeches, estate papers, and other papers of John, Henry K., and Edward T. May, concerning John's land speculations, his work as land agent for the Ohio Company of Associates, his service with the Boston Militia in the Revolutionary War, and his business activities as wharfinger of Union Wharf (Boston); Henry's activities as agent for New England merchants in Alexandria, Va., and as merchant, shipmaster and wharfinger of Union Wharf (Boston); and Edward's work as Boston Custom House agent.

136Title:  Ohio Militia, 4th Division Records

 Abstract:  The Ohio Militia was established by the Ohio Constitution in 1803. Based on precedents established by the Northwest Territory, male citizens between the ages of 16 and 45 in Ohio were required to perform military duty. The Ohio Militia was divided into four divisions initially, with a fifth established in 1813. Elijah Wadsworth of Canfield, Ohio, commanded the 4th Division. Each division was further divided into four or five brigades, which were then divided into regiments and companies. The collection consists of orders, class rolls, record of appointments, and court-of-inquiry reports of the 4th Division of the Ohio Militia.
