He also served as chairman of a statewide committee that drafted the first uniform traffic code for Ohio. In his private law practice, he was involved in several important litigations, including the Cleveland Clinic fire disaster of 1929, in which he represented the victim's families. The collection consists of six scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings and correspondence. Most of the clippings relate to litigation against the East Ohio Gas Company rate increases, a recall effort against Mayor Fred Kohler, and the resignation of Lamb and other cabinet officials. Voinovich | | | | Dates: | 1977-1989 | | | | Abstract: | George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. The collection consists of the mayor's office files transferred in 1989 to the Western Reserve Historical Society as an agent of the Ohio State Archives under the Ohio Public Records Law. After service in the Navy during World War II, he joined the Cleveland law firm of Jones, Day, Cockley & Reavis, where he practiced estate administration, corporate law, and litigation. He was a partner until his retirement in 1973. He was active in the Cleveland Bar Association and the Cleveland Law Library Association. As a sportsman he was an active sailor, participating in races at the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club. He taught sunday school at The Temple-Tifereth Israel and was a volunteer counselor at Camp Wise in the 1930s. He served on the boards of many organizations, including the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the Jewish Convalescent Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital, and the Jewish Family Service Association. | | | | Creator: | Welles, Melancthon Woolsey | | | | Dates: | 1818-1896 | | | | Abstract: | Melancthon Woolsey Welles came to Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1819 to study law at the firm of Kelley and Cowles. His sister, Mary Seymour Welles, had married prominent Clevelander Alfred Kelley in 1817. Welles was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1823. He then moved to Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio, and was appointed the first prosecuting attorney for that county in 1824. In 1826, Welles became the first toll collector at Akron, Ohio, on the Ohio and Erie Canal. While in Akron, he also served as the first postmaster, was a justice of the peace, and practiced law. Welles was a member of the Portage County Temperance Society, an incorporator of the Akron Lyceum and Library Association, and an agent for the Ohio State Temperance Society. He returned to Elyria in 1835 to practice law. In 1837, Welles moved to Cleveland and entered into a law partnership with Edward Wade and Edward Hamlin. He continued his involvement with temperance and antislavery groups while living in Cleveland. In 1841, he returned to Elyria, continuing his antislavery and temperance endeavors. Welles also served as a Commissioner of deeds for the State of Ohio and a Notary Public for Lorain County. During the 1840s, he became a member of the Liberty Party, and subsequently, the Free Soil Party. In 1849, through the auspices of Dr. Norton S. Townshend, Welles was appointed state agent for the sale of school lands, and moved to Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. By 1860, Welles was living at Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa, and working as a land agent. He remained in Iowa the rest of his life. Of particular interest to the study of early Akron, Ohio, is a photocopy of a ca. 1825 manuscript map of the village. He is the grandson of American president William Howard Taft. He married Frances Prindle (December 12, 1921-May 14, 2017) on June 19, 1943 and they had four children: Frederick I. (Rick) (b. June 26, 1945), Thomas P. (b. July 19, 1948), Cynthia B. (b. May 24, 1950), and Seth Tucker (Tucker) (b. March 4, 1953). They were active members of the greater Cleveland, Ohio, cultural, civic, and political community. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, diaries, journals, account books, appointment books, ledgers, stock certificates, minutes, leases, articles of incorporation, wills, deeds, corporate inventories, maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax assessments and returns, diplomas, certificates, military orders, and discharge papers. Material is included on several banking institutions, including Garfield Savings Bank, The Western Reserve Trust Company, Metropolitan National Savings Bank, and the East End Savings and Trust Company. Material on Ford family involvement in the construction and management of the Williamson Building is included, as is family involvement in other real estate enterprises, including The New Amsterdam Company, One Euclid Company, and the Ford McCaslin Company. Involvement in various legal firms by H. Clark, Horatio, and David K. Ford is well documented, as is David K. Ford's role in the organization and operation of the Lubrizol Corporation and Lubrizol Foundation. Family involvement with the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, and with other philanthropic and social service organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Maternal Health Association, University Hospitals, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, is documented. Family members were also involved with the Congregational City Missionary Society, the Congregational Home Missionary Society, the Schauffler Missionary Training School (later Schauffler College of Religious and Social Work), and the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States. David K. Ford's involvement with Defiance College is documented.
