 Abstract:  Picket Latimer and his brothers, Peter and John Mulford Latimer, were farmers in Huron County, Ohio. Picket and John also operated a general store, P. & J.M. Latimer, in Norwalk, Ohio. John's son, John Mulford Latimer, Jr., served as a captain in the 101st Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. The collection consists of photocopies of letters written to Picket Latimer regarding the business operations of his general store in the 1840s and copies of John Mulford Latimer, Jr.'s American Civil War service records.

 Abstract:  Benjamin F. Sells (b. 1824) was a Coshocton, Ohio, soldier who served with the 122nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The collection consists of correspondence, ordnance returns, military orders, autobiographical sketch, and papers relating to the court-martial of Sells, who was dismissed from the service for criticizing the war and the President and for vigorously supporting the candidacy of Clement L. Vallandigham for Governor of Ohio in 1863. Also includes an essay on the Mexican War.

 Abstract:  Charles H Smith (1837-1912) was a Cleveland, Ohio, grain merchant who had served as an officer in the 27th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. His wife, Louisa Johnson Smith (1847-1932), was a humanitarian and civic leader in Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, muster rolls, general and special orders, reports of ordnance stores, returns, affidavits from the court-martial of John W. Mercer, legal documents about land purchases in Kansas, minutes of reunions of Fuller's Ohio Brigade, the Society of the Tennessee, and the Loyal Legion, speeches and miscellaneous notes and papers used in writing The History of Fuller's Ohio Brigade, and other military papers of Charles H. Smith; and correspondence, programs and papers from various patriotic organizations, speeches, and an incomplete scrapbook of Louisa Johnson Smith.

 Abstract:  William McKinley (1843-1901) was the 25th president of the United States. He was shot on 6 September, 1901 and died eight days later. During the American Civil War he was Commissary Sergeant with the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother-in-law, Andrew J. Duncan also served during the Civil War. The collection consists of photographs, general correspondence, family papers, financial papers, Civil War records of McKinley and A. J. Duncan, and letters of condolence and other material relating to McKinley's death in 1901.

 Abstract:  Ada Watterson Yerkes was related to three families who settled early in the Western Reserve. The Harper family came from New York in 1798 and founded Harpersfield, Ohio. The Norton family came from New York before 1839 when Ada Yerkes maternal grandparents were married in Harpersfield. The Watterson family came from England in 1826 and settled in Warrensville, Ohio. Various family members served in the Civil War and were active in a number of business ventures, including the Gardner Gun Company of London, England and the Ogleby-Norton Company of Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, receipts, insurance policies, legal papers, genealogical material, drafts of a family history, diaries and notebooks relating to the Harper, Norton and Watterson families.

The collection consists of correspondence and records relating to the telegraph offices of the U.S. Army in Danville, Kentucky, Cairo, Illinois, and New Orleans, Louisiana, during the American Civil War; Gross' correspondence while he served as manager of the Western Union office in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1866-1867; and other personal correspondence. Includes copies of messages sent to and received from General Ulysses S. Grant when he was planning his campaign against Vicksburg, Mississippi.

 Abstract:  Samuel Hollingworth Stout (1822-1903) was a physician who served as Medical Director of the General Hospitals of the Army and Department of Tennessee during the American Civil War. The collection consists of papers concerning Stout's activities in the hospitals of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. The bulk of the papers cover the period 1863-1864 and give a detailed report on the conditions and daily life of Confederate Army hospitals, mostly in Georgia. Includes special orders, lists of medical officers, hospital stewards or managers, train surgeons, field nurses, and other employees, and reports of supplies of medicines and foods, hospital equipment and furnishings, and patients admitted.

 Abstract:  John Devereux was a sea captain of Marblehead, Mass. John H. Devereux was an American Civil War general, engineer, railroad executive, and philanthropist, of Cleveland, Ohio. Henry K. Devereux was an engineer, real estate agent, industrialist, philanthropist, and harness-horse fancier, of Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, business, financial, and legal documents, genealogical data, ship's logs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and other papers, of John Devereux, John H. Devereux, and Henry K. Devereux. Bulk of the collection relates to railroad construction and John H. Devereux's career with several railroads. Includes records (1895-1916) of the Gentlemen's Driving Club, and material relating to Henry K. Devereux's interest in trotting horses and harness racing and his activities as an official of several businesses. The collection also documents the role played by the railroad for the Union during the American Civil War.

 Abstract:  William Pendleton Palmer (1861-1927) was President of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio (1913-1927). The collection consists of American Civil War documents collected by Palmer, including military and personal correspondence, muster rolls, official orders, ordnance and quartermaster reports, casualty lists, memoirs, diaries, descriptions of the engagements in which various regiments took part, and papers dealing with veterans' organizations after the war. Half of the collection relates to Ohio volunteers, but there are papers from Union and Confederate regiments of thirty States. Includes material concerned with Negro regiments enlisted in the Southern States occupied by Union Armies, and a few references to the Mexican War and the 1850s. Collection features the James E. Taylor Sketchbook.

 Abstract:  Michael Mulcahy (1839-1908) was enrolled as a private in the 6th United States Calvary in 1862 and was later promoted to sergeant, serving in the United States Civil War. Mulcahy received acclaim for his involvement in the famous Winchester Ride where he fought with General Sheridan in the Battle of Winchester. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on January 13, 1865. Mulcahy was born in County Cork, Ireland. After his soldier days, he came to Cleveland, Ohio, worked as a carpenter, and joined the volunteer fire department. He married Elizabeth Brennan on February 27, 1865 in St. Patrick's Church, Cleveland, Ohio. He later joined the first paid fire department organized in Cleveland. The collection consists of Civil War records pertaining to Michael Mulcahy's service, including register of enlistment, affidavits, and pension documents; a death certificate; newspaper clippings; and a letter.
