| | | Creator: | Kellys Island Literary Society | | | Dates: | 1860-1878 | | | Abstract: | Datus Kelley (1788-1866) and his family were some of the first permanent settlers of what later became Rocky River, Ohio. In 1833 Datus, with brother Irad, began to purchase land near Sandusky, Ohio, on Cunninghma's Island. The island was later renamed Kelly's Island. The Kelley Island Literary Society was established pursuant to the building of Kelley Hall, a hall Datus Kelley built. On December 22, 1860 the Literary Society published its first edition of the Islander. Anyone who wished to join the literary society was welcome, including women. The collection consists of issues of a manuscript newspaper published on Kelleys Island, in Sandusky Bay, Erie County, Ohio, by the Kellys Island Literary Society. The journal was "devoted to the discussion of questions in the Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Manufactures, Politics and Morality." Prepared and written during the winter months, issues were read before weekly gatherings of inhabitants of the isolated island. He and his older brother Oliver served in the 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Jeremiah Mansfield participated in the Battles of Chickamauga and the Battle of Perrysville, and then served at Camp Sheridan in Nashville, Tennessee until the end of the war. He and Elizabeth Taggart Mansfield were married in Harrison County, Ohio in 1869. She was born in 1845 in Harrison County, Ohio, and received a teaching certificate in 1863. Her brother, Milton, attended Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. By 1880, Jeremiah and Elizabeth Mansfield had settled in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, where they farmed and raised five children. The collection consists of correspondence, essays, and miscellany relating to the Mansfield and Taggart families; Jefferson and Harrison counties, Ohio; the Civil War; and Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. Ashley was a farmer and tanner. In 1822 he built what is now known as the Myra Seward Pitkin House, named for hs granddaughter. Myra Seward's father served in the Civil War and later settled in Middlebury, Ohio. The George F. Avery family resided in Brecksville, Ohio, from 1841-1907. His grandson, William Avery, served in the 177th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He married Rosaline Comstock in 1869, and operated a dairy farm in Brecksville. Nathaniel Gorgas served in the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. The collection consists of original documents, including an autograph album, a diary, and an account book, collected by a descendent of the Ashley, Avery, Gorgas, and Seward families of northeastern Ohio. Genealogy material, reminiscences, and correspondence have been transcribed and copied by the collector. Included are the Civil War letters of Nathaniel Gorgas to his parents, transcribed by the collector of these papers.
