 Abstract:  The City Mission is a nonprofit organization founded in 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Mel Trotter to provide assistance and opportunities to disadvantaged Clevelanders. The City Mission provides individual spiritual, emotional, and intellectual assistance, and also partners with other community programs to ensure that participants have as many opportunities as possible. The collection consists of 384 black and white and color photographs, 321 slides, and 2 negatives depicting people, views, and events associated with the City Mission of Cleveland.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland, Ohio, branch of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) is the local branch of an international civic and social organization for men and boys. It was established in 1854 and quickly expanded to include numerous branches throughout the Cleveland area which offer a full range of community, recreational and educational activities. The collection consists of photographs of YMCA functions, facilities, and past presidents and other officials. Includes loose photographs and 2 unbound scrapbooks. Photographs include the Fenn Hall and Central YMCA buildings, the Lakewood West Side and the Collinwood branches; East End photographs, photographs of a YMCA building being built, various unidentified group portraits, and one photo of Billy Sunday and Douglas Fairbanks playing baseball for the YMCA. Activities pictured include swimming, athletics, camping, and classes. Many interior views of YMCA facilities are included.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Section of the National Council of Jewish Women is a women's service organization founded in 1894, in Cleveland, Ohio, as a local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. Its services to Cleveland's Jewish and general communities include hot meals delivered to the elderly, homes for the elderly and working girls, scholarships, day nurseries and thrift shops. The collection consists of photographs, negatives, slides, and an album, relating to the members and activities of the National Council of Jewish Women, Cleveland Section, of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are photographs of the Council-sponsored Thrift Shop, a toy project, individual and group portraits of members at various functions, photographs of guest speakers, and photographs of the Martha House.

 Abstract:  United Torch Services was organized in 1957, as the United Appeal, to coordinate fundraising for Cleveland, Ohio, social service agencies and charities. It was the successor to the Cleveland Community Fund (est. 1919). In 1971 it changed its name to United Torch Services. It became United Way Services in 1978. The collection consists of photographs and negatives of leaders and activities of United Torch Services of Cleveland, Ohio. Also included are views of award presentations and banquets, and photographs of posters and booklet covers. Photographs related to the Minutemen, a United Appeal affiliated organization, are included. Negatives in the collection depict various United Torch buildings, centers, activities, and members. A photograph album entitled "United War Work Campaign November 1918" depicts war work activities of various organizations, such as the Salvation Army and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), during World War I.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Day Nursery Association was founded in 1882 by the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and the Young Ladies Temperance League to provide day care and health services for children of working mothers in Cleveland, Ohio. Its members worked for legislation, standards and licensing to improve all local nurseries. The collection consists of photographs and albums relating to the Cleveland (Ohio) Day Nursery Association. Included are scenes of activities and facilities at Harkness Summer Camp, Wade Nursery, and Bingham Nursery. Also included are photographs of children inside and on the playground and participating in other day nursery activities, publicity photographs, and exteriors of buildings.

 Abstract:  The Montefiore Home is a Jewish nursing home for aged and infirm Jews of Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1882 as the Aged and Infirm Israelites Home, was renamed the Sir Moses Montefiore Kesher Home for Aged and Infirm Israelites in 1884, and, in 1923, Montefiore Home. In the 1940s, Montefiore converted from providing residential care to social and psychological rehabilitation, including day care, social workers, a psychiatric unit, and sheltered workshop. An Auxiliary was formed in 1956-57 to help support Montefiore. In 1991 Montefiore, now a skilled nursing facility, moved to a new $22 million, 240-bed complex in Beachwood, Ohio. the collection consists of individual and group portraits of residents and staff, and views of facilities and activities of the Montefiore Home. Included are views of the original home at Woodland Avenue and East 55th Street, as well as the facility at 3151 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights. Included are portraits of past presidents and board members, including Jacob Rohrheimer, Jacob Mandelbaum, and R. Julius Weil.

 Abstract:  The Heights Benevolent and Social Union (HBSU) is the oldest existing Jewish benevolent society in Cleveland, Ohio. Heights Benevolent and Social Union (HBSU) was organized in 1881 as the Hungarian Benevolent and Social Union. By 1969 it changed its name to the Heights Benevolent and Social Union, since membership had been open to non-Hungarians for 50 years. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of presidents of the organization and presidents of the women's auxiliary, and views of annual installation dinners, anniversary dinners, other meetings, and HBSU meeting places.

 Abstract:  The Federation for Community Planning was founded in 1913, as the Federation for Charity and Philanthropy, to coordinate funding for the numerous charities in Cleveland, Ohio. It merged with the Welfare Council of Cleveland in 1917 to form the Cleveland Welfare Federation. In 1972 it became the Federation for Community Planning. By 1919 it had given up solicitation of funds and by 1966 their allocation also, evolving into a specialized community planning agency. The collection consists of views of various activities sponsored by the Federation for Community Planning. Some of the activities pictured include the Foster Home Recruiting Center, Mass Blood Testing Program, TB Clinic van, and Golden Age Hobby shows. Also included are individual and group portraits of those associated with the Federation, including Edward D. Lynde, executive secretary, and an album presented to him on his retirement.

 Abstract:  The Jones Home of Children's Services was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1887 as a home for foster children and orphans and originally called the Jones Home for Friendless Children. It was donated by Carlos L. Jones who ran it with his wife. It has since come under the aegis of the United Way and presently houses emotionally disturbed children and children awaiting hearings in juvenile court. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of staff members and residents of the Jones Home. Views depict activities of the children from the home and of events held for the children. The majority of the photographs are from the 1940s and 1950s. Also included are photographs from the 1962 75th Anniversary of the Jones Home.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Section of the National Council of Jewish Women is a women's service organization founded in 1894, in Cleveland, Ohio, as a local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. Its services to Cleveland's Jewish and general communities include hot meals delivered to the elderly, homes for the elderly and working girls, scholarships, day nurseries and thrift shops. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of women active in the organization, including Ruth Einstein, credited with the idea of Council Gardens, and past presidents Isabelle Brown, Iris Curtis, Ernestine Greenberger, Maddy Joseph, Betty Mintz, Barbara Sobel, Jo Tramer, Yetta Wasserman, and Peggy Wasserstrom. Group portraits and views document the varied activities taken on by the Cleveland Section in the 1960s and 1970s, including the preparation of the Access Guide to Cleveland Disabled and Elderly Individuals, volunteer work at Mount Pleasant Community Center, Thrift Shops, and the establishment of Council Gardens in 1963 and Council House in 1979. National activities are represented by views of various conventions and legislative meetings with congressmen Tom Lantos and Charles Vanik and senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum. International activities include Ship-a-Box, which sent toys to Israel. Also included are views of fashion shows and luncheons, popular social and fundraising events. Important early views include the "Beehive Booth," a fund raising event at Grays Armory in 1897, a Camp Wise view form 1907, and a Big Sister scene from 1919.

 Abstract:  David N. Myers was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1900. He worked his way through high school and earned an accounting degree from Dyke College, a local business college, in 1922. He accepted a position in accounting with the Francis Byerlyte Corporation, and subsequently became president and owner of the company, later known as Consolidated Coatings Corporation. He married Inez Pink in 1929, and the couple raised two sons. Myers' primary philanthropic interest was aging and the elderly. He was instrumental in facilitating the move of the Jewish Orthodox Home for the Aged from the Glenville neighborhood to Beachwood, Ohio. He also assisted in the construction of R.H. Myers Apartments, an independent living facility for the elderly. He served as the President of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland from 1964 to 1969 and, along with his wife, established the David and Inez Myers Foundation. In 1995, Dyke college was renamed David N. Myers College in recognition of Myers' contributions to the school. The collection consists of approximately 550 black and white photographs and 380 color photographs depicting Cleveland, Ohio philanthropy, business, and Jewish family life.

 Abstract:  The Family Service Association of Cleveland was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1867 as the Cleveland Bethel Union. It extended its services to all the city's poor, transients and unemployed in 1873 and renamed itself the Bethel Relief Association. It merged in 1884 with the Charity Organization Society (founded 1881) and was renamed Bethel Associated Charities, with the added function of investigation and registration of all cases. In 1900 it changed its name to Cleveland Associated Charities and began an era of modern social casework. In 1945 it adopted a new name, Family Service Association, and changed its focus from relief to professional casework services. It merged in 1976 with the Travelers Aid Society and various day care centers to form the Center for Human Services. The collection consists of individual portraits of Family Service Association staff members and views of families and neighborhoods served by the Family Service Association of Cleveland. Included are views of early twentieth century slum conditions in some of the neighborhoods served.

 Abstract:  Members of the Severance family were prominent bankers and industrialists in Cleveland, Ohio. The Severance family was also known for its philanthropic activities. Solon Severance, a Cleveland banker, was the son of Solomon Severance and Mary Helen Long, and a brother of Louis Severance. He was also a descendent of John Walworth, an early settler of Cleveland who was a civil engineer and was appointed in 1806 as the Custom Collector for the District of Erie. Solon's wife, Emily Allen, was the daughter of Dr. Dudley Allen, and the sister of prominent surgeon Dudley P. Allen. Solon and Emily's daughter, Julia Severance Millikin, was the wife of Benjamin Millikin, a noted Cleveland ophthalmologist. Julia's children included Helen Millikin Nash and Severance, Marianne, Dudley, and Louise Millikin. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Severance family members; allied families including the Allen, Hadden, Long, Millikin, Nash, Prentiss, Robbins, and Tryon families; and unrelated individuals, including Jacob D. Cox, Charles Gleason, and Rutherford B. Hayes. Also included are views of various family residences and trips.

 Abstract:  The Eliza Bryant Center Auxiliary II, formerly known as the Junior Board of the Eliza Bryant Center, was a group founded by African American women in 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio. Organized by Bessie Blue, it was to provide residents of the Eliza Bryant Center, a home for the African American elderly, with a cheerful and homelike atmosphere. Members of the Auxiliary raised funds to purchase items and supplies such as kitchen equipment, linen, beds, carpeting, and electronics. The collection consists of group portraits of Auxiliary members, Center residents, and program participants; and views of the Eliza Bryant Center and the programs, fundraisers, and other activities sponsored by its auxiliary. Included in the collection are photographs of Councilwoman Fanny Lewis, Congressman Louis Stokes, and Governor Richard Celeste. Events depicted include the annual Christmas Mart, a fashion show, social affairs, and fundraisers.

 Abstract:  Founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1918, as Goodwill Industries of Cleveland by Methodist minister Frank Milton Baker, Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland followed the concepts pioneered by Dr. Edgar J. Helms of Boston, Massachusetts. Its initial purpose was to furnish job training and employment for the aged, poor, and handicapped; and inexpensive clothing and furniture to the community through the processing of donated materials and management of Goodwill resale stores. In the 1930s, it began to focus on the vocational training and employment needs of people with physical, mental, and social disabilities. During the 1960s, rehabilitation counselors, psychologists, and social workers were added to its staff. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of the Board of Directors, Executive Directors, Cleveland journalists, staff, annual meetings and other events. Individuals pictured include Fred Grandy, Ralph Perk, Carl Stokes, Phyllis Diller, Vivian Vance, and Jane Powell. Views of Cleveland-area retail stores, donation processing facilities, Boy Scouts activities, fashion shows, activities of the Women's Auxiliary and Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services, and other vocational services and programs for the physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially handicapped are included.

 Abstract:  The Luntz Family came to prominence in Canton, Ohio, through the scrap metal industry. Samuel and Rebecca (Wolf) Luntz were Polish Jewish immigrants. Samuel founded the Canton Iron and Metal Company in 1898. Two of his sons, Darwin and Abe, founded their own scrap metal firm in 1916, The Luntz Iron and Steel Company, due to the growing need for scrap with the onset of World War I. Both Darwin and Abe were very involved in civic and community activities. Abe Luntz married Fanny Teplansky on October 10, 1916 in Canton, Ohio. They had five children. The family moved to Cleveland in 1939 for business purposes as well as for more varied religious, musical, and educational opportunities. The majority of the photographs included here pertain to Abe M. Luntz, his wife Fanny (Teplansky), their children, Robert, Richard, Joan, William, and Theodore, and their ancestors, both Luntz and Teplansky. The collection consists of 297 black and white/sepia photographs, 57 color photographs, and one color transparency.
