 Abstract:  The Glenn L. Martin Company was founded by Glenn L. Martin, a pioneer airplane manufacturer. It incorporated in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917 and remained until 1929, when Martin moved the company to Essex, Maryland. The company produced aircraft for military use. The Glenn L. Martin Company also built mail and passenger planes. It eventually evolved into the Martin Marietta Corporation. The collection consists of views of various aircraft and blimps, the Cleveland plant, and an R.A.F. jet bomber in Essex, Maryland, after a 1950s transatlantic flight. Also includes group portraits of Glenn L. Martin employees, interior and aerial views of the Glenn L. Martin plant in Cleveland, and postcards of the Glenn L. Martin plant in Essex, Maryland.

 Abstract:  Clifford W. Henderson (1895-1984) was the director of the National Air Races, 1928-1939, as well as other air races and expositions. Henderson managed and promoted sporting and cultural events, expositions, and conventions in the Los Angeles area after resigning from the National Air Races. He served with honor in North Africa during World War II, and founded the community of Palm Desert, California. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Clifford W. Henderson and his associates, including studio portraits and candid site photographs, often autographed; views of the National Air Races, including air race events and individual planes; and panoramic and oversize photographs. Individuals pictured include Pancho Barnes, Vincent Bendix, Jacqueline Cochran, Frederick C. Crawford, James Doolittle, Amelia Earhart, Harvey Firestone, Jr., Charles A. Lindbergh, Mary Pickford, Eddie Rickenbacker, Will Rogers, Alexander de Seversky, Roscoe Turner, Rudy Vallee, and Chuck Yeager.

3Title:  National Air Races Photographs

 Abstract:  The 1928 race of the National Air Races was held in Los Angeles, California, but from 1929 to 1939 most of the races were held in Cleveland, Ohio. They featured cross country races, short races, army and navy maneuvers, stunt flying, parachute jumping, gliders, dirigibles, balloons and model planes and were considered a working laboratory for the aviation industry where new developments could be tested and refined. The collection consists of individual portraits, group portraits, and views pertaining to the National Air Races, National Aircraft Shows, and Thompson Trophy Races. Individuals pictured include Clifford W. Henderson, Jimmy Doolittle, Pancho Barnes, Amelia Earhart, Roscoe Turner, Mary Pickford, Alexander de Seversky, Jacqueline Cochran, Frederick C. Crawford, and Bill Odom. Included are views of the 1949 crash site and debris.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of unlimited class and Thompson Trophy racing aircraft from 1920-1958. The photographs in this collection were selected to accompany an unpublished manuscript by Charles G. Mandrake on the history of the Thompson Trophy Race entitled, "The Thompson Trophy Story." A copy of this unpublished manuscript is available in MS 3942 TRW, Inc. Records held at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Included in this picture group collection are images of the famous Gee-Bee and Wedell-Williams aircraft of the 1930s, as well as the World War II fighter and jet aircraft that raced in the 1940s and 1950s.

5Title:  Charles H. Hubbell Photographs

 Abstract:  Charles H. Hubbell (1898-1971) was a well-known aviation artist and native of Cleveland, Ohio. During World War I, he served in the Navy and was a draftsman in the design of naval aircraft. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1922, and became a commercial artist. Hubbell received his private pilots license in 1927 by exchanging aviation art with flight instructors for flying lessons. He was commissioned by Thompson Products of Cleveland to paint the winning aircraft of each year's Thompson Trophy Race. In 1937, the first Thompson Products aviation art calendar by Charles Hubbell was produced. He painted for the yearly calendar until 1969. In 1949, the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) invited Hubbell on an around the world tour. The result was the 1951 calendar featuring the aircraft and operations of MATS. Hubbell was also a consultant to the Thompson Auto-Album and Aviation Museum, and later the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of views of aircraft, rockets, missiles, and drones; power plants; airfields and aviation-related facilities; equipment, and aviation personalities. Hubbell acquired these images for use as a reference source for his aviation artwork.

 Abstract:  James V. Funaro served as associate editor of the Friendly Forum, the company newspaper of Thompson Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. Funaro also worked as a freelance writer and as editor of The Cleveland Realtor, the magazine of the Cleveland Real Estate Board. CThe clection consists of portraits of aviation personalities, including Tex Rankin, Benny Howard, Roscoe Turner, Jimmy Doolittle, Amelia Earhart, Jean Assolant, Jimmie Haizlip, Frank Hawks, and Clifford Henderson; and views of aircraft. The majority of the images are of the 1932 National Air Races. Also included are images of airships, as well as various aviation newsletters.
