| | | Creator: | Schifflein Christi Church | | | Dates: | 1868-1975 | | | Abstract: | Schifflein Christi was the the first German church in Cleveland, Ohio. It was organized in 1835 as the First Evangelical Protestant Church of Cleveland. The name was changed to Schifflein Christi in 1876. The church merged with Ebenezer Evangelical Church in 1923 to form the First Evangelical Church. In 1929 Evangelical Protestant Trinity Congregation merged with the church and took its name. After a 1953 merger with Glenville Evangelical and Reformed Church and a 1967 merger with the Fellowship Church in Wickliffe, Ohio, the name was changed to Fellowship United Church of Christ. In 1912 it merged with the City Missionary Society to form the Congregational Union of Cleveland. In 1963 the Union was merged into the Western Reserve Association of the United Church of Christ. In 1934, a new constitution was adopted, which officially changed the name of the organization to the Cleveland Church Federation. A new constitution in 1958 changed the Federation's name to the Cleveland Area Church Federation. In 1965 the Cleveland Area Church Federation adopted another new constitution and new name, Council of Churches of Christ of Greater Cleveland, and in 1985, the Council adopted its present name, Interchurch Council of Greater Cleveland. After several years of meeting in a union church on the corner of Doan Street and Crawford Road, the church was adopted by the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church in 1888 and was then known as the "North Branch." By 1890 the North Branch was recognized as an independent church and a new, more centrally-located church was built on the corner of Crawford Road and Cullison Street. A Hough Avenue branch of the church existed from 1890 until 1934, under the name Hough Avenue Congregational Church. In 1934 it merged with the Euclid Avenue church. The Euclid Avenue Congregational Church was destroyed by fire on March 23, 2010.
