The collection consists of letters addressed to Scovill, relating to life in the Johnson's Island Prison, including several letters from former inmates, as well as theater programs, tickets, and lists of prisoners.

	Abstract:	Charles B. Smith was a Lieutenant with the 61st Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving as a Judge Advocate General at Camp Dennison, Ohio, through most of 1863. Smith was involved in military court proceedings, as well as being responsible for the issuing of general and special orders and the collection of unit muster sheets. In November 1864, Smith was reassigned to the Office of United States Military Telegraph, Mobile, Alabama, as a telegraph operator. In 1867, Smith submitted several invention patents for the improvement of spring beds and seats. The collection consists mainly of military legal correspondence relating to criminal charges, pleadings, proceedings, and sentencing of soldiers under the jurisdiction of the military headquarters of Ohio located at Camp Dennison, Ohio, particularly during 1863. There are also requests for unit muster rolls, regulation books, telegrams, routine inspection announcements, general orders, special orders, a deed, and petitions for invention patents.

	Abstract:	Stanley G. Lockwood (1789-1860) moved from Connecticut to Painesville, Ohio, where he opened a general store, in 1835. His sons, George D. Lockwood (1830-1874) and John S. Lockwood (born 1834), continued the firm. In 1856 George moved to Davenport, Iowa and opened another store, Livingston and Lockwood. During the American Civil War he was an officer in Companies D and I of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother, Stanley B. Lockwood (1840-1884), served in Company G. of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment and in Company K of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The collection consists of correspondence, military records, financial records, diaries, and newspaper clippings. A major topic of the correspondence is the American Civil War.

	Abstract:	John H. King was a Tuscarawas County, Ohio, resident who served in Company C, 80th Ohio Infantry during the American Civil War. The collection consists of photostatic copies of correspondence between King and his sister Catherine detailing King's Civil War experience. The collection pertains primarily to a soldier's life and military experiences during the Civil War, with respect to forced marches, battle accounts and living conditions, as well as King's ambitions for an Army career.

	Abstract:	Picket Latimer and his brothers, Peter and John Mulford Latimer, were farmers in Huron County, Ohio. Picket and John also operated a general store, P. & J.M. Latimer, in Norwalk, Ohio. John's son, John Mulford Latimer, Jr., served as a captain in the 101st Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. The collection consists of photocopies of letters written to Picket Latimer regarding the business operations of his general store in the 1840s and copies of John Mulford Latimer, Jr.'s American Civil War service records.

The collection consists of diaries, apparently kept by Roberts, before and during the Civil War, and a certificate.

	Abstract:	Zerah Coston Monks was a teacher from Curllsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. After serving with a Union regiment during the American Civil War, he married Hannah Rohrer, of Stewart's Run, Venango County, Pennsylvania. His cousin, Andrew J. Monks, was Ordnance Sergeant of the 105th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in 1863. The collection consists of correspondence, a Civil War diary, biographical sketches, and poetry, concerning the Monks, Rohrer, and Conpropst families.

The collection consists of correspondence, ordnance returns, military orders, autobiographical sketch, and papers relating to the court-martial of Sells, who was dismissed from the service for criticizing the war and the President and for vigorously supporting the candidacy of Clement L. Vallandigham for Governor of Ohio in 1863. Also includes an essay on the Mexican War.

During 1869 he practiced law in Mississippi, where he had a strong interest in the attitudes and actions of residents of this state toward Reconstruction.. The collection consists of reminiscences of Metcalf's childhood on a Medina County, Ohio, farm, his student days in Oberlin, and primarily his service during the Civil War, and his experiences as a lawyer in Mississippi during Reconstruction.

	Abstract:	James Barnett (1821-1911) was an Army officer, of Cleveland, Ohio, who was active in various nineteenth century philanthropic and charitable endeavors. The collection consists of correspondence, history, notes, and other papers, relating to Barnett's service with the 1st Ohio Light Artillery in Tennessee during the Civil War; diaries (1862-1865) of Philander B. Gardner, of Berea, Ohio, Addison F. Stockham, of Hambden Ohio, and Newton D. Strong, of Strongsville, Ohio, members of Barnett's regiment; correspondence relating to the Dept. of Ohio, Grand Army of the Republic; correspondence and other papers (1878-1899) relating to the Bethel Associated Charities, particularly Bethel Union Relief Dept.; and correspondence, statements, and annual reports (1890-1895) of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Company.

	Abstract:	Morris E. Meyer was a German Jew born in Hanover, Germany, in 1812. He emigrated to the United States, settled in Charleston, South Carolina, and became a citizen in 1844. He married Sarah Gertrude Oppenheim, a fourth generation member of a South Carolina Jewish-American family. About 1863 they moved to Camden, South Carolina, where he established himself as a merchant in the cotton trade, and was himself a slaveholder. During General William T. Sherman's sweep through Camden in 1865, Meyer lost his entire store of cotton and many household goods. After the Civil War, Meyer moved to New York City, where he engaged in the cotton trade and other ventures. Sometime after 1877, he and his family took up residence in Hanover, Germany, where he died in 1886. The collection consists of business and family records and correspondence, including cotton claims, records of cotton purchases, inventories, a presidential pardon for Meyer following the Civil War, and family passports. Of particular interest are slave transactions, 1850-1865, including bills of sale and mortgage bonds related to slave transactions by Morris Meyer 1850-1861, and a list of Meyer's household slaves in 1865.

He maintained an active correspondence with his brothers and sisters living in various sections of the country. Included are letters from Marcus A. Hanna and Chester C. Bolton regarding politics. The collection consists of a diary, travel journal, newspaper clippings, and family correspondence written and received by John W. McClure, his sister Belle McClure Wilson, brothers David T. McClure and William H. McClure, and John McClure's friends and business associates in the United States and France, as well as invitations, menus, theater programs, and printed poems.
