1Title:  Near West Side Development Association Records

 Abstract:  The Near West Side Development Association was a citizen's group formed in 1963 to promote communication and activities between urban planners in the City of Cleveland's Urban Renewal Department and residents of Cleveland, Ohio's near west side. The Association prepared reports, made recommendations, and assisted in planning of urban development. Representatives of over twenty business, banking, educational, religious, charitable, and medical organizations participated in the Association. The collection consists of correspondence, articles of association, minutes of trustee meetings, treasurer's reports and invoices, membership lists, director's reports, and newspaper clippings, relating to the association while Thomas J. Miller served as its executive director, and reflecting its interest in land use, schools, traffic problems, street relocations, and housing.

 Abstract:  Ahaz Merchant (1794-1862) was a surveyor in Cuyahoga County from 1833-1835 and 1845-1850. His son, Aaron merchant (1817-1875) was also a Cuyahoga County Surveyor from 1854-1869. Aaron Merchant's son, Corwin C. Merchant was a surveyor as well. The collection consists of correspondence, banking and tax papers, deeds, land descriptions, land surveys, topographical surveys, maps, blueprints, subdivision plats, diaries, field books, account books, and deed index books.

 Abstract:  Isaac Newton Pillsbury was a civil engineer of Cleveland, Ohio. He served as engineer and superintendent of the 2nd Subdivision of the Cleveland, Painesville & Ashtabula Railroad Company in the 1850s. The collection consists of correspondence, notes on mathematics and surveying, notes on building estimates for bridges and arches for the Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Company, surveys of land in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, surveying and elevation information about Cleveland streets and the Great Lakes, surveys of routes of Cleveland railroads and of the Ohio, Miami, and Sandy & Beaver Canals, and other papers.

 Abstract:  Anthony J. Celebrezze (1910-1998) was an Ohio state senator (1950-1953), mayor of Cleveland (1953-1962), Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (1962-1965), and federal judge for the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals (1965-1980). The collection consists of correspondence, clippings, honorary certificates and resolutions, publications, speeches, and scrapbooks, covering Celebrezze's political and judicial career, and relating to Cleveland's budgetary, city planning, civil defense, public transportation and urban renewal issues during the 1950s and 1960s, and to the anti-poverty, civil rights, education, and health insurance programs of Presidents Kennedy & Johnson. Includes correspondence of John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Frank Lausche, Stephen M. Young, Michael DiSalle, Thomas Burke, Jack P. Russell, and Ralph Locher.
