After retiring he wrote several books, including his family history, entitled: A brief genealogical and biographical record of Charles Roscoe Howland, brothers and forebears. The collection consists of genealogical notes compiled by Charles Howland concerning the Howland family, with a small amount of notes on the Thomas Wood family.
