| | | | Creator: | Jewish Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center of Cleveland | | | | Dates: | 1957-1978 | | | | Abstract: | The Jewish Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center of Cleveland, previously known as the Jewish Convalescent Hospital, was established in Cleveland, Ohio, through the combined resources of the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society (later known as the Jewish Chronic Relief Society) and the Bikur Cholim Sick Relief Society, and with the cooperation of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland and Mount Sinai Hospital. Founded in 1937, the nineteen bed facility was located at 18810 Harvard Rd., and met the needs of tubercular patients who were released from the Warrensville Sanatorium and the City Hospital. The hospital expanded in the 1950s, and with the decrease in tuberculosis, began to serve the chronically ill. In 1967, the name was changed to the Jewish Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center of Cleveland, reflecting new services provided. In 1979, the facility was sold to a proprietary nursing home operator. | | | | Creator: | Kelly, Dawson Family | | | | Dates: | 1917-1924 | | | | Abstract: | Dawson Kelly was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a grandson of Irish immigrant Daniel Kelly. His parents were William Kelly, a plumber, and Mary Dawson. He married Anna Melia in 1920. She had arrived in Cleveland from Ireland ca. 1912. Dawson Kelly served in the United States Army from 1918-1919. He initially was stationed at Camp Gordon in Atlanta, Georgia, and later was sent to France. During this time, he and Anna Melia exchanged letters. After his return to Cleveland, he worked as a plumber, and also at Westinghouse Company. A child, William Austin, was born to Dawson and Anna Kelly in 1921. In 1922, Anna Kelly became ill with tuberculosis and died in 1923. Dawson Kelly formed the D.W. Kelly Moving Company ca. 1925. It later became known as the D.W. Kelly & Son Moving Company. He remarried in 1929 and had three more children. The collection consists of correspondence, postcards, greeting cards, a job referral, and receipts. Dawson Kelly's letters as a soldier in the United States Army during World War I reflect his experiences, both at Camp Gordon, Atlanta, Georgia, and in Toul, France. | | | | Creator: | Jewish Chronic Relief Society | | | | Dates: | 1935-1988 | | | | Abstract: | The Jewish Chronic Relief Society was established in 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Ladies Consumptive Aid Society, to provide assistance and care to indigent Jews afflicted with tuberculosis or other chronic conditions. In 1923 the group incorporated as the Cleveland Denver Consumptive Ladies Aid Society and, in 1935, as the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society of Cleveland. Together with the Bikur Cholim Sick Relief Society and with the cooperation of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland and Mt. Sinai Hospital, the society helped raise the funds to build the Jewish Convalescent Hospital for tuberculosis patients. By the 1940s, the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society included a Junior Auxiliary, the Daughters of the Consumptive Relief Aid Society; a men's group; and a Cleveland Heights group. With the decrease in tuberculosis, the organization changed it's name in 1958 to the Jewish Chronic Relief Society. The organization disbanded in 1988.
