| | | Creator: | Van Metre, Maurice E. | | | Dates: | 1943-1944 | | | Abstract: | Maurice E. Van Metre (1895-1970) was a popular Cleveland, Ohio, journalist who served as theater and radio-television critic and gossip columnist for the Cleveland News and suburban Sun newspapers. During World War II, he published "The Dirt at the News", a monthly newsletter for Cleveland members of the armed forces, which included the whereabouts and experiences of Cleveland servicemen, especially 120 former News employees. The collection consists almost entirely of letters to Van Metre from friends and former co-workers who subscribed to The Dirt at the News. These letters represent a portion of those Van Metre compiled and edited into his entertaining miniature newspaper and include letters from many well-known persons, providing insights into the war-time experiences of servicemen at home, as well as the battlefront. Also included are some printed materials relating to Van Metre and his newsletter. | | | Call #: | MS 4247 | | | Extent: | 0.40 linear feet (1 container) | | | Subjects: | Van Metre, Maurice E., 1895-1970. | Cleveland news -- Employees -- Correspondence. | Soldiers -- Ohio -- Cleveland -- Correspondence. | World War, 1939-1945 -- Personal narratives, American. | World War, 1939-1945 -- Ohio -- Cleveland.
