Hopper was a Cleveland, Ohio, paint mill operator for Standard Oil of Ohio who also owned barrel plants near Standard Oil's refineries. He sold the plants to New York Standard Oil in 1882 and became head of its barrel preparing department. He and Mark L. Deering invented hoop-driving and barrel-trussing machines and the apparatus for gluing barrels. The collection consists of income and expense book for Hopper's plants, a letter to John D.
