| | | | Creator: | Garretson, George Armstrong Family | | | | Dates: | 1898-1919 | | | | Abstract: | George Armstron Garretson (1844-1916) was a General who commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps, and later the 1st Brigade, Provisional Division, during the Spanish American War. He was also president of the National Bank of Commerce in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of four albums and 18 loose photographs. Album 1 is entitled 135th Field Artillery American Expeditionary Forces. Photographs document the unit's training at Camp Sheridan, its service in France, and its return to the United States in 1917-1919. The album also includes some clippings, correspondence, and cloth insignias. Album 2 contains photographs showing military scenes at Camp Alger, VA. during June 1898. The scenes include many views of George Garretson and his regiment. Album 3 contains views relating to military life and activities on board the U.S.S. Yale and in Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. Album 4 contains photographs of Troop A, Cleveland, Ohio, en route to and on duty at the Mexican border in 1917, along with newspaper clippings and pamphlet material concerning Troop A.
