 Abstract:  TRW, Inc. was established in 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of individual and group portraits, including Charles Hubbell, Samuel L. Mather, Thomas E. Dewey, Henry Ford, Edsel Ford, Henry Ford II, Frederick C. Crawford, Gene Autry, and other employees and associates of TRW Inc. Subjects of photographs include Thompson Aircraft Products Company, trade shows, Garrison Machine Works, the Frederick C. Crawford home, Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, Ford Motor Company the TRW administration buildings and plants, a Thompson Products press binder, Thompson Products family day (1949), and the crew of the "Memphis Belle."

Product photographs include automotive valves, pistons, generators, fuel pumps, jet engine parts, and electronic and industrial equipment. Product ads include company logos, advertisements for trade shows, parts stores and machine shops; as well as individual products and displays of manuals and catalogs. Portraits of management figures include Frederick C. Crawford, Tom O. Duggan, and J. L. Coolidge, and photographs of workers in both work and social settings are also included.

The images were acquired by Thompson Products from the Dearborn Library-Henry Ford Museum and were used as a supplement to Thompson Products' existing aviation photographic reference library. Included are numerous images of early Wright and Curtiss aircraft, as well as World War I aircraft. The collection also contains many images of aircraft and equipment representing the rapid advances made in aviation technology during the inter-war years.

The collection also includes photographs taken by George Baine of aviation events in and around the Cleveland, Ohio area. Images of aviation related events, aircraft trading cards, and aircraft recognition cards are also part of the collection, as are photographs of the National Air Races of 1949 held in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Cleveland National Air Shows from the 1960s and 1970s.

 Abstract:  Clifford W. Henderson (1895-1984) was the director of the National Air Races, 1928-1939, as well as other air races and expositions. Henderson managed and promoted sporting and cultural events, expositions, and conventions in the Los Angeles area after resigning from the National Air Races. He served with honor in North Africa during World War II, and founded the community of Palm Desert, California. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Clifford W. Henderson and his associates, including studio portraits and candid site photographs, often autographed; views of the National Air Races, including air race events and individual planes; and panoramic and oversize photographs. Individuals pictured include Pancho Barnes, Vincent Bendix, Jacqueline Cochran, Frederick C. Crawford, James Doolittle, Amelia Earhart, Harvey Firestone, Jr., Charles A. Lindbergh, Mary Pickford, Eddie Rickenbacker, Will Rogers, Alexander de Seversky, Roscoe Turner, Rudy Vallee, and Chuck Yeager.

 Abstract:  The 1928 race of the National Air Races was held in Los Angeles, California, but from 1929 to 1939 most of the races were held in Cleveland, Ohio. They featured cross country races, short races, army and navy maneuvers, stunt flying, parachute jumping, gliders, dirigibles, balloons and model planes and were considered a working laboratory for the aviation industry where new developments could be tested and refined. The collection consists of individual portraits, group portraits, and views pertaining to the National Air Races, National Aircraft Shows, and Thompson Trophy Races. Individuals pictured include Clifford W. Henderson, Jimmy Doolittle, Pancho Barnes, Amelia Earhart, Roscoe Turner, Mary Pickford, Alexander de Seversky, Jacqueline Cochran, Frederick C. Crawford, and Bill Odom. Included are views of the 1949 crash site and debris.

The collection consists of individual aircraft; reciprocating, jet, and rocket aviation power plants; personalities; famous flights; and miscellaneous images related to all aspects of aviation history through the mid-1960s. The collection represents the history and development of aviation airframe and power plant technology. Over 200 aircraft manufacturing types and over 100 power plant manufacturing types are represented, including numerous images of Curtiss and Wright aircraft, as well as many lesser known manufacturing types. The collection also contains many images of dirigibles, blimps, and balloons. The photographs in this collection were acquired by Thompson Products of Cleveland, Ohio from the Dearborn Library-Henry Ford Museum, the Wright Patterson Air Force Technical Museum, and from various aircraft and aviation related industries, including the Curtiss-Wright and Boeing corporations, and were used by Thompson Products as an aviation photographic reference source.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of unlimited class and Thompson Trophy racing aircraft from 1920-1958. The photographs in this collection were selected to accompany an unpublished manuscript by Charles G. Mandrake on the history of the Thompson Trophy Race entitled, "The Thompson Trophy Story." A copy of this unpublished manuscript is available in MS 3942 TRW, Inc. Records held at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Included in this picture group collection are images of the famous Gee-Bee and Wedell-Williams aircraft of the 1930s, as well as the World War II fighter and jet aircraft that raced in the 1940s and 1950s.

 Abstract:  James V. Funaro served as associate editor of the Friendly Forum, the company newspaper of Thompson Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. Funaro also worked as a freelance writer and as editor of The Cleveland Realtor, the magazine of the Cleveland Real Estate Board. CThe clection consists of portraits of aviation personalities, including Tex Rankin, Benny Howard, Roscoe Turner, Jimmy Doolittle, Amelia Earhart, Jean Assolant, Jimmie Haizlip, Frank Hawks, and Clifford Henderson; and views of aircraft. The majority of the images are of the 1932 National Air Races. Also included are images of airships, as well as various aviation newsletters.

 Abstract:  Frederick C. Crawford (1891-1994) was a Cleveland, Ohio, industrialist and philanthropist. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Frederick C. Crawford and various Crawford family members. Views of various Crawford family homes are included, as are images from travels taken by Crawford. Portraits and views of Steel Products Co. and Thompson Products Inc. facilities and employees, including Thompson Products president Charles E. Thompson and Thompson family members, are also part of the collection. Pioneers in the aviation and aerospace industries are represented in the collection and include James E. Doolittle, T. Keith Glennan, aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran, and three time Thompson Trophy Race winner Roscoe Turner. Others depicted include Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Claire Chennault, and William M. McVey. Groups Crawford was associated with, including the Western Reserve Historical Society, Harvard University, and various national aeronautic associations and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), are also part of the collection, as are portraits and views depicting the National Air Races.
