 Abstract:  Alfred E. Bell (ca. 1835-1912) was the Captain in the Ninth Tennessee Cavalry during the American Civil War. He was captured in Ohio in 1863 and incarcerated on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie until 1865. Afterwards he returned to Tennessee and entered politics. The collection consists of letters from Bell to his wife and to his sister, Fannie, while he was a prisoner of war on Johnson's Island, also a letter to Bell from a friend and fellow prisoner, George F. Wilson.

 Abstract:  Wilbur F. Hinman was a soldier in Company E of the 65th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga in 1863 yet remained in the service until his company mustered out in November 1865. The collection consists of letters from Hinman to his family in Berea, Ohio, while he was in the service. Topics include the battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro in 1863 and the Atlanta campaign of 1864. Also included are a letter from David Hinman to his wife, and a letter to Wilbur Hinman from Carrie Starr.

 Abstract:  Amelia Marx (1849-1900) was a Cleveland, Ohio, Jew, the daughter of Feist Marx and the wife of Joseph Strauss. Her three brothers, Charles, Edward and Moses, all served in the Civil War. The collection consists of photocopies of correspondence and miscellaneous documents, including naturalization papers, report cards, business agreements and recipes, all relating to the Marx, Strauss and Hawkins families. The collection is relevant to the study of 19th century American Jews, with special attention to their participation in the Civil War. Included is a letter to Edward Marx that refers to Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination. Another letter, dated 1865, comments on the oil boom near Meadville, Pennsylvania.

 Abstract:  Alcinus Ward Fenton (1839-1923) was a soldier in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, which was stationed in Virginia during most of the American Civil War. He later served as a customs broker, customs inspector, and chairman of the Board of Examiners of the Civil Service Customs House in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of Civil War letters written by Fenton while serving with the 6th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry; 2 scrapbooks of reunion records (ca. 1884) of the 6th Ohio Cavalry Veterans Association; and scrapbooks of letters and newspaper clippings relating to Fenton's career in customs administration, his relations with Charles F. Leach (customs collector and Republican political leader), political patronage, and Fenton's fitness for office.

 Abstract:  The United States Sanitary Commission (Soldiers' Aid Society of Northern Ohio) was established in 1861 in Cleveland, Ohio, to provide for the physical needs of soldiers by improving camp hygiene and diets, collecting and disbursing hospital stores, inspecting hospitals and other medical facilities, caring for sick and wounded soldiers, registering and burying the dead, building and supporting a soldiers home, and conducting a special relief system and employment service. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, memoranda, receipt, cash, and memoranda books, acknowledgements of equipment received, bank drafts, insurance policies, newspaper clippings, and other papers. Includes invoices and other papers concerning the Northern Ohio Sanitary Fair, 1864, and a memoir of Caroline Younglove Abbott concerning the work of the organization.

 Abstract:  Charles H. Anderton (b. 1844) of Bedford, Ohio, was soldier in Company D, the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was wounded and captured on May 27, 1864 near Altoona, Georgia. His whereabouts were reported as unknown at the end of the war. He participated in the battles of Tullahoma, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga, and, later, served with Sherman in Georgia. The collection consists of a Civil War diary, communication from the War Department to Anderton's father, receipt for money wired home, and a scrap claimed to be from Anderton's brigade flag.

 Abstract:  Correl Smith was a Captain in Company G, 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant on September 15, 1861, Smith assisted in organizing the 19th OVI during its muster at Alliance, Stark County, Ohio. Smith was promoted to Captain on January 2, 1863, and discharged from service on October 4, 1864. The collection consists of a diary kept by Captain Smith during the Civil War.

 Abstract:  Morris and Elanor Stamm were labor, peace, civil rights and political activists from Cleveland, Ohio. Morris Stamm emigrated from Russia and came to Cleveland in 1916, where he was a laborer for 61 years. He joined the Communist Party in 1928 and was a shop floor organizer for the United Electrical Workers (UEW) in the Cleveland area. Stamm fought as a foot soldier with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War from 1937-1938. He married Eleanor Ginsberg in 1940. In 1949, Stamm was fined and jailed for picketing violations in a bitter strike of the Fawick-Airflex company called by Local 735 of the UEW. In the 1970s, Morris and Eleanor led the Cleveland Committee for a Democratic Spain, and were highly involved in the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Eleanor was politically active throughout her life, holding memberships in the American Youth Congress, the Young Communist League and the Youth Committee of the American League Against War and Fascism. The collection consists of material relating to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, including English- and Spanish-language publications, correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, newsletters, propaganda, posters, paintings, programs, reports and research papers. The collection also contains similar document types pertaining to other activities and organizations the Stamms were involved in, especially the United States Committee for a Democratic Spain. Included is material re: the strike of the Fawick-Airflex Co. in 1949, personal manuscripts and writings, and material pertaining to politics in the Cleveland metro area during the 1970s. The collection pertains primarily to the Spanish Civil War and Morris Stamm's participation in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, the effort to establish democracy in post-war Spain, socialism and communism, and labor unrest during the 20th century.

 Abstract:  William Foster (1840-1907) was a medical student from Scio (New Market), in Harrison County, Ohio who became a sergeant and hospital steward in the 126th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was involved in numerous battles before he mustered out in July, 1865. He married Katherine Humphrey that September. The collection consists of photocopies of Civil War correspondence, mainly to Katherine Humphrey.

 Abstract:  Aquila Wiley (b. 1834 or 1835) was a colonel of the 41st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the Battle of Missionary Ridge (1863) during the American Civil War. Wiley was appointed commandant of Camp Cleveland in 1864, where he oversaw the rendezvous and training of several new infantry regiments, and as a Major became the chief mustering officer at Cleveland, where he administered the discharge of some 11,654 Union troops. Wiley later practiced law in Wooster, Ohio and served 1 term as probate judge in Wayne County. He was nominated for Congress in 1878, and was opposed by William McKinley. The collection consists of correspondence, bounty claims, muster rolls, invoices, and returns, mostly pertaining to Wiley's activities in the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1861-1865. Includes articles and speeches on Civil War topics; lists of voters and their political affiliations in Wayne Co., Ohio, in the 1890s; and correspondence and maps (1893-1901) relating to the Ohio Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission.

Kearsarge and the C. S. S. Alabama, June 19, 1864, and a printed letter (1888) from Morse to W. L. Putnam of Portland, Maine, concerning Morse's claim of $38,189 against the United States.

The regiment saw much military action in Virginia. The collection consists of letters (1861-1864), mounted in 3 scrapbooks, written by Merrick, to his wife, giving a detailed account of Merrick's activities and those of his regiment; pocket diary (1862); medical notes, financial accounts, lists of office furniture, medicines, and books; personal correspondence (1885-1901) of Richard L. Merrick, of Cleveland, Ohio; and obituary notices for Dr. Myra K. Merrick (1824-1899).
