The gospel music group emerged from the Golden Star Singers of York, Alabama, that performed in the late 1940s. The original members of the Spiritual Five were Johnny, Nathan, and Willie Yarbrough, Willie Samuels, and H.J. Wynn. The group performed in churches, nursing homes, hospitals, and prisons. In 1975, the group began to sponsor an annual Cancer Gospel-Thon, benefiting the American Cancer Society.
