The association was formed in 1870 and was composed primarily of veterans of the Civil War. It met annually in reunion to pay tribute to one another and to honor deceased members. It disbanded in 1922. The Cleveland Light Artillery was originally organized in 1839 by 9 members of the Cleveland Grays gun squad, an independent military organization made up of young men chosen from the area's elite families. It was named the Cleveland Light Artillery in 1846, when it was detached from the Grays, and served as an independent artillery militia service until 1860, when it became part of Battery A of the 1st Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, led by Col. James Barnett.
