McIntyre, Dorothy Layne Family http://norton.wrhs.org/collections/view?docId=ead/MS4649.xml Dorothy Layne McIntyre was one of the first African American women to receive a private pilot's license under the Civil Aeronautics Authority. She trained in the cadet flying program while attending West Virginia State College, receiving her pilot's license in 1940. During World War II she taught aircraft mechanics at the War Production Training School in Baltimore, Maryland, while simultaneously working as a secretary in the industrial department of the Baltimore Urban League. In 1942, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and married F. Benjamin McIntyre; they had two daughters, Dianne McIntyre and Donna McIntyre Whyte. The collection consists of photocopies of original pilot log books, publications concerning aeronautics, newspaper clippings, and correspondence. The collection pertains to Doroty McIntyre's career in the aeronautics industry.
