He quit high school at 16 years old to help support his family and incurred multiple nervous breakdowns and confinement in mental institutions in the following years. He spent his time reading the Bible religiously and sending letters and books to editors and publishers over the world. By 1826 communities were established throughout New England and the Midwest, as well as in Georgia and Florida. In 1911 Wallace H. Cathcart, Director of the Western Reserve Historical Society, began collecting Shaker memorabilia.
