Van Metre (1895-1970) was a popular Cleveland, Ohio, journalist who served as theater and radio-television critic and gossip columnist for the Cleveland News and suburban Sun newspapers. During World War II, he published "The Dirt at the News", a monthly newsletter for Cleveland members of the armed forces, which included the whereabouts and experiences of Cleveland servicemen, especially 120 former News employees. The collection consists almost entirely of letters to Van Metre from friends and former co-workers who subscribed to The Dirt at the News. These letters represent a portion of those Van Metre compiled and edited into his entertaining miniature newspaper and include letters from many well-known persons, providing insights into the war-time experiences of servicemen at home, as well as the battlefront. The founders were Gene and Jerry Squires, Ralph Bing, and Leonard Perlick. As these men were inducted, other friends stepped in to publish the newsletter, including Babs Blaushild, Florence Rosen, Ivy Goldhamer, Dick and Jane Haber, and Renee Pollack Caplan. The mailing list grew to more than 400, and was eventually appended to many issues so that GIs could communicate directly with each other. Issues included articles and columns concerning the war from the perspective of the Cleveland home front, a gossip column, entertainment reviews, sports, news of Jewish communal activities, and first hand reports from the front by soldiers. Prior to writing plays, she was an award-winning journalist for local, regional and national publications, including the Cleveland Jewish News. She served as president of the Society of Professional Journalists from 1993-1994. Sholiton is a graduate of Shaker Heights High School, and she holds a master's degree in French language and literature from George Washington University. Sholiton's full-length works have been read or produced in more than three dozen venues throughout the country and have won more than twenty national honors. She has developed her work in the Cleveland Play House Playwrights' Unit since 1996 and in Dobama Theatre's Playwrights' Gym since 2009. He was also a writer for the Cleveland City Planning Commission and a book reviewer for the Washington Post. Hall compiled an unpublished history of the Jack & Heintz Company, Jack & Heintz: the Human Factory, which focused on the company's wartime production. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, speech texts, diaries, and publications. Series I consists mainly of radio scripts written by Hall as information specialist for the Cleveland Office of Civilian Defense during World War II. Series II consists of Hall's research material and several drafts of his unpublished manuscript, Jack & Heintz: The Human Factory, on the Jack & Heintz Company (Jahco) during World War II.
