Zerah Coston Monks was a teacher from Curllsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. After serving with a Union regiment during the American Civil War, he married Hannah Rohrer, of Stewart's Run, Venango County, Pennsylvania. His cousin, Andrew J. Monks, was Ordnance Sergeant of the 105th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in 1863.
