He received a patent on his gas mask in 1912 and formed the National Safety Device Company to manufacture and market it. He also established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company, The Cleveland Call and Post, and the Wakeman Country Club for African Americans. His wife, Mary Brown Martin, was a teacher and the first African American to serve on the Cleveland Public School Board. Their son, Alexander H.
