Kates, Dorothy Davis http://norton.wrhs.org/collections/view?docId=ead/MS4749.xml Dorothy Davis Kates was employed by the Historical Records Survey of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1930s; serving as a Superintendent of the Cuyahoga County Archives Survey Project, as an Area Supervisor, a Project Planning Assistant, and eventually as the Director of the Historical Records Program of the WPA in Cleveland. Kates was also active in many civic and arts organizations throughout her life, including the Print Club of Cleveland, the Cleveland Society for Contemporary Art, and the Women's City Club of Cleveland. Beginning in 1966, she chaired the Mental Health Committee of the Women's City Club, helping to organize lectures and community projects concerned with mental health, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, child abuse, and prison reform issues. She founded the Women's City Club Mental Health Institute in 1976. Kates was also active in local Democratic Party politics, particularly in the presidential elections of 1960, 1964, and 1968. Steinke, John http://norton.wrhs.org/collections/view?docId=ead/PG561.xml John Steinke (ca. 1895-ca. 1971) was a free-lance amateur photographer of German descent who was born in New York, but moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Most of his photographic activity appears to have spanned the 1920s-1940s. He lived in at least two different locations in Bratenahl during his lifetime: East 118th Street and Burton Avenue. By vocation, he worked in the sheet metal industry. As a photographer, he worked in a wide variety of genres, experimenting with fine-art photography as well as commissioned work for various organizations in the Cleveland area. He submitted, and had his work shown in Cleveland and other nearby cities, as well as at shows in the Smithsonian, Canada, France, Greece, and Japan. Steinke played an important early role in the Cleveland Photographic Society, being president of the club in 1923, as well a member of the Board of Trustees.
